Assessment of Sidewalk Conditions in Urban Neighbourhoods
Abstract
Sidewalks are important components of urban neighbourhoods because they provide dedicated spaces for pedestrians to move safely and conveniently between homes, commercial areas, public facilities, transport stops, and other destinations. The physical condition of sidewalks can significantly influence pedestrian safety, accessibility, comfort, and overall walkability. Poorly maintained or inadequately designed sidewalks may contain cracks, uneven surfaces, obstructions, inadequate drainage, and insufficient widths, creating difficulties for pedestrians. Assessing sidewalk conditions is therefore important for understanding the quality of pedestrian infrastructure within urban neighbourhoods. This study assesses sidewalk conditions in urban neighbourhoods, focusing on their physical quality, accessibility, continuity, safety, and functionality. It examines characteristics such as sidewalk width, surface condition, levelness, drainage, pedestrian crossings, curb design, accessibility features, lighting, obstructions, and connections to surrounding streets and facilities. The assessment also considers how sidewalk conditions vary between different neighbourhood areas and how these conditions influence pedestrian movement. Effective sidewalks require continuous and unobstructed pedestrian routes that provide adequate space for different users. Smooth and durable surfaces, appropriate widths, accessible curb ramps, adequate drainage, and properly maintained pedestrian crossings can improve safety and convenience. The study also considers the needs of elderly pedestrians, children, wheelchair users, and other people with mobility limitations, since sidewalk design should support diverse users and minimize unnecessary physical barriers. The surrounding urban environment can also influence sidewalk performance and usability. Encroachment by traders, parked vehicles, utility infrastructure, vegetation, construction materials, and poorly positioned street furniture can reduce available pedestrian space. Inadequate lighting and poor drainage may further affect pedestrian safety and comfort. The study therefore examines the relationship between sidewalk conditions, adjacent land uses, maintenance practices, and pedestrian experience within urban neighbourhoods. Urban neighbourhoods may face challenges such as inadequate sidewalk provision, poor maintenance, inconsistent design standards, drainage problems, unauthorized parking, pedestrian encroachment, and limited enforcement of development regulations. These problems can reduce walkability and encourage pedestrians to use roadways, increasing their exposure to traffic risks. Improving sidewalk conditions requires coordinated planning, regular maintenance, effective enforcement, appropriate pedestrian infrastructure, and consideration of accessibility during urban development and upgrading projects. The study concludes that the condition and quality of sidewalks have important implications for pedestrian mobility, accessibility, safety, and neighbourhood livability. Continuous, accessible, well-maintained, and properly designed sidewalks can support walking and improve connections between residential areas and important urban destinations. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for urban planners, architects, engineers, local authorities, developers, and transport professionals in assessing existing sidewalk infrastructure and developing strategies for improving pedestrian environments.
