Assessment of Spatial Hierarchy in Contemporary Public Buildings
Abstract
Spatial hierarchy is an important principle in architectural design because it establishes relationships between spaces according to their level of importance, function, accessibility, and degree of privacy. In contemporary public buildings, effective spatial hierarchy can help organize complex functions, guide users, control movement, and create clear transitions between different areas. Poorly defined spatial relationships may result in confusion, inefficient circulation, inadequate privacy, and difficulties in understanding the organization of a building. Assessing spatial hierarchy is therefore important for evaluating the functional and experiential quality of contemporary public buildings. This study assesses spatial hierarchy in contemporary public buildings by examining how spaces are organized and differentiated according to their functional and spatial importance. It focuses on relationships between primary, secondary, and supporting spaces, as well as the connections between public, semi-public, semi-private, and restricted areas. The study considers factors such as spatial scale, accessibility, location, visibility, enclosure, circulation, and proximity in determining the hierarchical organization of building spaces. Particular attention is given to how spatial hierarchy influences movement and wayfinding. Major entrances, reception areas, atriums, corridors, staircases, and other circulation elements can establish a clear sequence through which users understand and navigate public buildings. Changes in scale, ceiling height, lighting, material treatment, and spatial openness can further reinforce the distinction between important and supporting spaces. The study examines how these architectural elements contribute to the legibility and coherence of contemporary public buildings. The study also considers the relationship between spatial hierarchy and user experience. Public buildings accommodate diverse groups of users with different needs and patterns of movement, making clear spatial organization particularly important. Appropriate transitions between active and quiet areas, public and restricted spaces, and formal and informal environments can support privacy, comfort, accessibility, and functional efficiency. The relationship between spatial hierarchy and social interaction is also considered where shared spaces form important components of public buildings. Challenges may arise where contemporary public buildings contain complex programmes, overlapping functions, multiple circulation routes, or insufficient differentiation between spaces. Excessive openness can weaken privacy and spatial distinction, while excessive compartmentalization may restrict flexibility and movement. Effective spatial hierarchy therefore requires a balanced approach that responds to functional requirements, user behaviour, accessibility, flexibility, and the architectural character of the building. The study aims to assess the effectiveness of spatial hierarchy as an organizing principle in contemporary public buildings. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects and designers in developing buildings with clearer spatial relationships, improved circulation, and stronger user orientation. The study can contribute to the creation of contemporary public buildings that are more functional, legible, accessible, and responsive to the diverse needs of their users.
