Assessment of Threshold Spaces in Contemporary Building Design
Abstract
Threshold spaces are important elements in architectural design because they mediate between different spatial conditions, activities, and levels of privacy. They may occur at entrances, verandas, lobbies, courtyards, corridors, transitional zones, and other locations where users move from one environment to another. In contemporary building design, well-planned threshold spaces can improve orientation, comfort, social interaction, and the transition between interior and exterior environments. Assessing their design and functionality is therefore important for understanding their contribution to contemporary architectural experiences. This study assesses the role and characteristics of threshold spaces in contemporary building design, with emphasis on their spatial, functional, environmental, and experiential qualities. It examines how entrance areas, transitional corridors, semi-open spaces, lobbies, terraces, and other intermediate zones are organized and connected to adjoining spaces. The study considers factors such as scale, enclosure, accessibility, visibility, circulation, and spatial continuity in determining the effectiveness of threshold spaces. Particular attention is given to the role of threshold spaces in facilitating movement and spatial transition. Clearly defined transitional zones can help users understand changes between public and private areas, indoor and outdoor environments, and active and quiet spaces. Changes in material, lighting, ceiling height, enclosure, landscaping, and spatial proportions may reinforce these transitions. The study examines how such architectural elements contribute to wayfinding, spatial legibility, and user experience. The study also considers the environmental and social functions of threshold spaces. Semi-open and transitional areas can provide shade, natural ventilation, daylight, and opportunities for informal interaction while reducing the abrupt separation between buildings and their surroundings. Such spaces may also provide areas for waiting, gathering, resting, or informal communication. Their effectiveness is therefore examined in relation to climatic conditions, user behaviour, accessibility, comfort, and the activities occurring around them. Challenges may arise when threshold spaces are poorly defined, excessively narrow, inadequately shaded, inaccessible, or disconnected from surrounding functions. In some contemporary buildings, the emphasis on enclosed internal spaces may reduce opportunities for meaningful transitional environments. Effective threshold design therefore requires consideration of circulation, privacy, environmental comfort, safety, accessibility, social interaction, and the relationship between architectural and landscape elements. The study aims to assess the significance and effectiveness of threshold spaces in contemporary building design and identify design characteristics that enhance their functional and experiential value. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects and designers in creating meaningful transitions between different spatial conditions. The study can contribute to contemporary architectural approaches that improve spatial continuity, environmental comfort, user orientation, social interaction, and the overall quality of building environments.
