The Effect of Lecture Hall Seating Arrangement on Student Experience

Abstract

The physical arrangement of seating within lecture halls plays an important role in shaping students' learning environment and overall educational experience. Seating configuration influences visibility, communication, movement, interaction, concentration, and access to teaching resources. As higher educational institutions accommodate diverse teaching methods and increasing student populations, understanding how seating arrangements affect student experience is important for creating lecture spaces that support effective learning and comfort. This study examines the effect of lecture hall seating arrangement on student experience, focusing on how different spatial configurations influence students' perceptions and participation during academic activities. The study considers conventional row seating, curved arrangements, clustered seating, tiered configurations, and other flexible layouts. Factors such as viewing angles, distance from teaching areas, personal space, accessibility, circulation, and interaction between students and lecturers are examined in relation to the quality of the learning environment. Visibility and communication are particularly important components of lecture hall design. The position and orientation of seats can affect students' ability to see presentation screens, writing surfaces, lecturers, and other visual materials. Similarly, seating arrangements can influence opportunities for eye contact, discussion, collaboration, and student participation. Poorly organized seating may create visual obstructions, excessive viewing distances, or restricted interaction, potentially affecting students' engagement with teaching activities. The study also considers the relationship between seating arrangement, physical comfort, and movement. Adequate legroom, seat spacing, aisle width, ergonomic design, and ease of access can influence how comfortable students feel during extended lecture periods. The arrangement should also accommodate students with mobility limitations and provide clear circulation routes for entry, exit, and emergency evacuation. These considerations demonstrate that seating design involves both educational and environmental dimensions. Other factors, including lecture hall capacity, teaching methods, technology integration, acoustics, lighting, and student population density, may influence the effectiveness of seating arrangements. A configuration that supports traditional lecture-based teaching may not be equally suitable for collaborative or technology-supported learning. Consequently, flexibility in seating arrangements can become increasingly important as teaching approaches evolve and institutions seek to accommodate different forms of academic interaction. The study aims to assess how lecture hall seating arrangements influence student experience and identify spatial characteristics that contribute to effective learning environments. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, educational planners, university administrators, and facility managers in designing or improving lecture halls. The study can contribute to the development of more comfortable, accessible, interactive, and learner-centred academic spaces that respond effectively to students' physical, visual, and social needs.
