The Influence of Islamic Architectural Principles on Modern Mosque Design

Abstract

Islamic architectural principles have played a significant role in shaping the design and identity of mosques across different historical and cultural contexts. As contemporary architecture continues to evolve in response to technological, environmental, and social changes, modern mosque design increasingly seeks to balance traditional Islamic values with contemporary architectural expressions. Elements such as spatial organization, geometric patterns, courtyards, domes, minarets, arches, ornamentation, and principles of modesty and community interaction remain influential in defining mosque environments. This study examines the influence of Islamic architectural principles on modern mosque design, focusing on how traditional concepts are interpreted within contemporary architectural practice. Particular attention is given to principles related to prayer orientation, spatial hierarchy, communal gathering, privacy, geometric order, natural light, ventilation, and the symbolic expression of Islamic identity. The study seeks to understand how these principles are incorporated into modern mosque buildings without limiting architectural innovation. The research also considers the transformation of traditional mosque elements within contemporary design. Features such as domes, minarets, arches, courtyards, screens, and Islamic geometric ornamentation may be reinterpreted through modern materials, construction technologies, structural systems, and simplified forms. Such adaptations can create architectural expressions that retain cultural and religious significance while responding to contemporary functional requirements and changing patterns of worship. Environmental performance is another important consideration in modern mosque design. Traditional Islamic architecture often incorporated passive strategies such as courtyards, shaded spaces, controlled openings, thick walls, and natural ventilation to improve environmental comfort. The study therefore examines how these principles can be combined with contemporary sustainable design strategies to reduce energy consumption, improve thermal comfort, enhance daylighting, and create healthier worship environments. The study further explores the relationship between Islamic architectural principles and the social function of contemporary mosques. Modern mosques frequently accommodate educational activities, community gatherings, social services, libraries, and other communal functions in addition to prayer. Spatial flexibility, accessibility, gender-sensitive planning, circulation, and integration with surrounding communities are therefore important considerations in translating traditional principles into contemporary mosque environments. The study aims to provide a clearer understanding of how Islamic architectural principles can inform modern mosque design while maintaining religious identity, cultural continuity, environmental responsiveness, and functional relevance. Its findings are expected to assist architects and designers in developing mosque environments that respect Islamic traditions while responding to contemporary architectural requirements. By thoughtfully integrating traditional principles with modern technologies and design approaches, contemporary mosques can maintain cultural authenticity while meeting the evolving needs of worshippers and communities.
