The Influence of Landscape Design on Public Institutional Buildings

Abstract

Landscape design is an important component of public institutional buildings because it influences the environmental quality, functionality, visual character, and user experience of institutional environments. Spaces surrounding schools, government offices, healthcare facilities, and other public institutions can provide opportunities for circulation, relaxation, social interaction, and outdoor activities. However, poorly planned landscapes may result in inadequate shade, poor drainage, limited usability, and weak connections between buildings and outdoor spaces. Understanding the influence of landscape design is therefore important for creating functional and comfortable institutional environments. This study examines the influence of landscape design on the performance and user experience of public institutional buildings. It focuses on landscape elements such as vegetation, pedestrian pathways, seating areas, lawns, trees, shading structures, water features, and outdoor gathering spaces. The study considers how these elements are arranged around institutional buildings and how their configuration affects movement, accessibility, comfort, interaction, and the overall quality of the institutional environment. Particular attention is given to the environmental benefits of landscape design. Vegetation and strategically positioned trees can provide shade, reduce exposure to solar radiation, improve outdoor thermal comfort, and contribute to better microclimatic conditions around buildings. Landscape features can also assist with stormwater management, reduce dust, filter pollutants, and improve the visual quality of institutional environments. The relationship between landscape configuration and the environmental performance of surrounding building spaces is therefore considered. The study also examines the functional and social roles of institutional landscapes. Well-designed outdoor spaces can support informal meetings, recreation, waiting, relaxation, pedestrian movement, and social interaction among building users. The provision of accessible pathways, appropriate seating, clearly defined activity areas, and comfortable gathering spaces can improve the usability of institutional grounds. Attention is also given to the relationship between landscape design, building entrances, circulation routes, and major activity areas. Challenges associated with institutional landscape design may include inadequate maintenance, inappropriate plant selection, poor drainage, insufficient shade, limited seating, and weak integration between landscape and building design. These issues can reduce the functionality and long-term performance of outdoor institutional spaces. Effective landscape planning therefore requires consideration of local climatic conditions, user needs, maintenance requirements, accessibility, safety, and the functional activities of each institution. The study aims to establish how landscape design influences the environmental, functional, and social performance of public institutional buildings. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, landscape designers, facility managers, and public authorities in planning and improving institutional landscapes. The study can contribute to the development of greener, more comfortable, accessible, and functional public institutional environments that support the wellbeing and everyday activities of their users.
