The Influence of Landscaping on the Attractiveness of Commercial Buildings

Abstract

Landscaping is an important component of commercial building design because it contributes to the visual character, environmental quality, and overall attractiveness of commercial properties. Well-designed landscapes can enhance building appearance, create inviting entrances, improve pedestrian experiences, and strengthen the identity of commercial developments. In contrast, poorly maintained or inappropriate landscaping may reduce visual appeal and create an unfavourable perception of a commercial property. Understanding the influence of landscaping on commercial building attractiveness is therefore important for effective architectural and site planning. This study examines the influence of landscaping on the attractiveness and perceived quality of commercial buildings. It focuses on landscape elements such as trees, shrubs, lawns, flower beds, pedestrian walkways, entrance planting, outdoor seating, and decorative features. The study considers how the selection, arrangement, scale, and maintenance of these elements interact with building form, façade treatment, entrances, and surrounding site conditions to influence the visual perception of commercial environments. Particular attention is given to the relationship between landscaping and building visibility and identity. Strategic placement of vegetation and landscape features can frame building entrances, define pedestrian approaches, soften hard architectural surfaces, and create a stronger relationship between buildings and their surroundings. The study also considers how colour, texture, vegetation height, seasonal appearance, and landscape composition can contribute to the visual coherence and distinctiveness of commercial properties. The environmental and functional contributions of landscaping are also examined. Trees and vegetation can provide shade, reduce surface temperatures, improve outdoor thermal comfort, and create more pleasant pedestrian environments. Landscaped areas may also provide spaces for informal seating, waiting, social interaction, and outdoor commercial activities. These environmental and functional benefits can influence how users perceive and engage with commercial buildings beyond their immediate visual appearance. The study recognizes that the attractiveness of commercial landscaping is influenced by maintenance, climatic conditions, plant selection, security, accessibility, and the intensity of site use. Poor maintenance, unsuitable plant species, damaged landscape elements, inadequate irrigation, and poorly designed pedestrian routes can reduce the effectiveness of landscaping. Sustainable landscape strategies that respond to local environmental conditions and require manageable levels of maintenance can therefore support the long-term attractiveness of commercial properties. The study aims to assess how landscaping influences the visual, environmental, and functional attractiveness of commercial buildings. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, landscape designers, developers, and property managers in integrating landscape elements into commercial building design. The study can contribute to the development of more attractive, comfortable, environmentally responsive, and user-oriented commercial environments that strengthen the identity and appeal of commercial properties.
