The Influence of Landscaping on Urban Public Space Quality
Abstract
Landscaping is an important component of urban public space because it influences environmental quality, visual character, comfort, usability, and the overall experience of people within urban areas. Well-planned landscaping can introduce vegetation, shade, attractive views, seating opportunities, and ecological functions into public spaces. Conversely, poorly designed or inadequately maintained landscapes may reduce usability, create safety concerns, and contribute to environmental discomfort. Understanding the influence of landscaping on urban public space quality is therefore important for creating functional, attractive, and responsive urban environments. This study examines the influence of landscaping on urban public space quality, focusing on the physical, environmental, social, and aesthetic characteristics created through landscape design. It considers elements such as trees, shrubs, lawns, ground covers, planting arrangements, pedestrian pathways, seating areas, shade structures, water features, and other landscape components. The study also assesses how these elements influence the attractiveness, accessibility, comfort, functionality, and overall perception of urban public spaces. Vegetation can contribute to improved environmental conditions within urban public spaces by providing shade, reducing surface temperatures, filtering air pollutants, and supporting natural drainage. Trees and other plants can also help reduce the effects of urban heat and create more comfortable conditions for pedestrians and other users. The study therefore considers the relationship between planting strategies, microclimatic conditions, ecological performance, and user comfort within landscaped public spaces. Landscaping can also influence social interaction and patterns of public-space use. The arrangement of trees, seating, open areas, pedestrian routes, and recreational features can create opportunities for gathering, relaxation, informal activities, and community interaction. Attractive and well-maintained landscapes may encourage people to spend more time in public spaces and support a stronger sense of place. The study examines how landscape organization contributes to these social and behavioural dimensions of urban public space quality. Despite its potential benefits, urban landscaping may face challenges such as inadequate maintenance, inappropriate plant selection, water requirements, vandalism, insufficient funding, and conflicts between vegetation and pedestrian or infrastructure needs. Poorly selected plants can obstruct pathways, damage infrastructure, or create visibility and security concerns. Effective landscape planning therefore requires appropriate plant selection, suitable spatial organization, regular maintenance, and consideration of local environmental conditions and patterns of public-space use. The study concludes that landscaping can significantly contribute to the quality, comfort, functionality, environmental performance, and visual character of urban public spaces. Well-designed and properly maintained landscape elements can improve pedestrian experience, encourage social interaction, moderate microclimatic conditions, and strengthen the identity of public places. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, landscape architects, urban planners, local authorities, developers, and community stakeholders seeking to improve the quality and sustainability of urban public spaces.
