Abstract

Residential open spaces play an important role in shaping the quality, functionality, and overall experience of housing environments. Spaces such as courtyards, gardens, terraces, balconies, communal yards, and landscaped areas provide opportunities for relaxation, social interaction, recreation, and connection with nature. However, the quality and usability of these spaces vary considerably depending on their design, accessibility, environmental conditions, and relationship with residential buildings. Understanding how these factors influence user satisfaction is therefore important for improving the quality of residential environments. This study examines the influence of residential open spaces on user satisfaction, with particular attention to the physical and functional characteristics of outdoor areas within residential developments. The study considers factors such as spatial size, accessibility, privacy, landscaping, seating provision, circulation, maintenance, shading, and the overall organization of open spaces. It also explores how residents perceive the comfort, attractiveness, usability, and functionality of these spaces in relation to their everyday residential activities. The study further investigates the relationship between open-space design and patterns of residential use. Well-designed open spaces can support outdoor relaxation, children's play, informal gatherings, social interaction, and individual activities while contributing to improved environmental quality. Features such as vegetation, shaded areas, adequate seating, pedestrian accessibility, and appropriate spatial zoning can increase the usability and attractiveness of residential outdoor spaces. Conversely, poorly maintained, inaccessible, exposed, or inadequately planned spaces may discourage residents from using them. Environmental and social considerations are also important in determining user satisfaction with residential open spaces. Thermal comfort, natural ventilation, daylight, noise conditions, visual quality, security, and privacy can influence how residents perceive and use outdoor areas. The relationship between private and shared open spaces is particularly significant because residents require a balance between opportunities for social interaction and areas that provide personal privacy and retreat. Despite the potential benefits of residential open spaces, challenges such as inadequate maintenance, limited space, poor landscaping, insufficient shading, inappropriate furniture, and weak connections between indoor and outdoor areas can reduce their effectiveness. These challenges may be more pronounced in high-density residential developments where outdoor space is limited and multiple user groups compete for available areas. Addressing these issues requires an integrated approach that considers both physical design characteristics and the behavioural needs of residents. The study aims to establish how the design and quality of residential open spaces influence user satisfaction and to identify the key features that contribute to positive residential outdoor experiences. The findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, planners, developers, and housing managers in designing and managing residential open spaces that are functional, comfortable, attractive, and responsive to users' needs. Ultimately, the study seeks to contribute to improved residential environmental quality and enhanced resident satisfaction.
