The Influence of Signage on Customer Navigation in Shopping Centres
Abstract
Signage is an important component of shopping centre design because it assists customers in understanding and navigating complex commercial environments. Large shopping centres often contain multiple entrances, shops, service areas, recreational facilities, parking areas, and circulation routes, making effective wayfinding essential for a positive user experience. Poorly designed or inadequately positioned signage can create confusion, increase unnecessary movement, and make it difficult for customers to locate their destinations. Understanding the influence of signage on customer navigation is therefore important in the planning and design of shopping centres. This study examines the influence of signage design on customer navigation within shopping centres. It focuses on the visibility, positioning, legibility, consistency, colour, typography, symbols, and information content of directional and identification signs. The study considers how these characteristics affect customers’ ability to identify entrances, locate shops and facilities, understand circulation routes, and move confidently through different areas of shopping centres. Particular attention is given to the relationship between signage and the spatial organization of shopping centres. Effective signage should correspond with building entrances, corridors, intersections, vertical circulation points, and major activity areas. The study examines how signs positioned at decision points can provide timely information and reduce uncertainty during navigation. It also considers the importance of visual hierarchy and consistent sign systems in helping customers distinguish between directional, informational, identification, and regulatory information. The study further considers how customer characteristics influence the effectiveness of signage. Differences in age, familiarity with the shopping centre, language, visual ability, and previous experience may affect how users interpret and respond to wayfinding information. The incorporation of recognizable symbols, appropriate text sizes, clear colour contrast, and accessible information can improve navigation for diverse groups of customers. The relationship between signage and other wayfinding elements, such as landmarks, spatial visibility, lighting, and architectural features, is also examined. Challenges such as inadequate signage, inconsistent information, poor visibility, excessive visual clutter, inappropriate sign placement, and insufficient accessibility can negatively affect customer navigation. Excessive signage may also create visual confusion when different signs compete for attention. Effective wayfinding therefore requires an integrated approach in which signage is coordinated with the architectural layout, circulation system, interior design, and overall identity of the shopping centre. The study aims to assess how signage influences customer navigation and wayfinding within shopping centres. Its findings are expected to provide useful guidance for architects, interior designers, facility managers, and commercial developers in developing clear, accessible, and effective signage systems. The study can contribute to the creation of shopping environments that support easier movement, reduce navigational difficulties, improve customer experience, and enhance the functional performance of commercial spaces.
