The Potential of Net-Zero Energy Buildings in Nigeria
Abstract
Nigeria's growing population, rapid urbanization, and increasing demand for electricity have created a need for more sustainable approaches to building design and energy management. Buildings consume significant amounts of energy for cooling, lighting, ventilation, appliances, and other services, contributing to rising operational costs and environmental impacts. Net-zero energy buildings offer a potential approach to addressing these challenges by reducing building energy demand through efficient design and systems while generating renewable energy to offset the remaining energy consumption. This study examines the potential of net-zero energy buildings in Nigeria. A net-zero energy building is generally designed to achieve a balance between the energy it consumes and the renewable energy it generates over a defined period. Achieving this balance requires the integration of energy-efficient building designs, passive cooling strategies, efficient building services, energy management systems, and renewable energy technologies. In Nigeria, the country's considerable solar energy potential provides an important opportunity for integrating photovoltaic systems into residential, commercial, institutional, and public buildings. Passive design strategies can play an important role in reducing the energy demand of Nigerian buildings. Appropriate building orientation, natural ventilation, daylighting, solar shading, thermal insulation, efficient building envelopes, and suitable window design can reduce cooling and lighting requirements. These strategies are particularly relevant in Nigeria's warm climatic conditions, where cooling can represent a significant portion of building electricity demand. Reducing energy demand before introducing renewable energy systems can make the achievement of net-zero energy performance more practical. Renewable energy systems, particularly solar photovoltaic technology, can complement energy-efficient building design by providing on-site electricity generation. Solar energy can be integrated through rooftop photovoltaic systems, building-integrated photovoltaic technologies, and other suitable applications. Battery storage and energy management systems may further support the use of renewable electricity and improve the reliability of energy supply. The combination of energy efficiency, renewable generation, and appropriate energy storage can contribute to reducing dependence on conventional electricity sources. Despite its potential, the development of net-zero energy buildings in Nigeria faces several challenges. These may include high initial investment costs, limited access to financing, inadequate technical expertise, limited awareness, maintenance requirements, availability of suitable technologies, and regulatory constraints. The reliability and accessibility of electricity infrastructure can also influence the design and operation of net-zero energy buildings. Addressing these challenges requires collaboration among government agencies, architects, engineers, developers, financial institutions, energy providers, and building owners. This study assesses the potential of net-zero energy buildings in Nigeria by examining energy-efficient design strategies, renewable energy opportunities, technological requirements, and barriers to implementation. The study is expected to demonstrate how passive design, energy-efficient systems, solar energy, and energy management can contribute to achieving net-zero energy performance. The findings will provide useful information for architects, engineers, policymakers, developers, and other stakeholders seeking to promote sustainable building development in Nigeria. The study may also support efforts to reduce building energy consumption, operating costs, and environmental impacts while improving the long-term sustainability of the Nigerian built environment.
