The Role of Emerging Building Technologies in the Future of Nigerian Architecture
Abstract
Emerging building technologies are increasingly transforming architectural practice by introducing new approaches to design, construction, building performance, and facility management. Technologies such as Building Information Modelling, artificial intelligence, digital fabrication, 3D printing, smart building systems, advanced materials, and renewable energy technologies are creating new opportunities for architectural innovation. In Nigeria, where the built environment continues to respond to rapid urbanization, housing demands, climate challenges, and infrastructure limitations, the adoption of emerging technologies may influence the future direction of architectural practice. This study examines the role of emerging building technologies in the future of Nigerian architecture, focusing on their potential applications across the architectural design and construction process. It considers how digital design tools, computational methods, prefabrication, modular construction, smart building systems, and advanced construction technologies can improve design development, project coordination, construction efficiency, and building management. The study also explores the extent to which these technologies can be adapted to Nigerian environmental, economic, and professional contexts. Particular attention is given to technologies that can improve building performance and environmental sustainability. Smart building management systems, renewable energy technologies, energy-monitoring systems, advanced building envelopes, efficient mechanical systems, and responsive environmental controls can contribute to improved energy performance and indoor environmental quality. Digital simulation and performance analysis can also help architects evaluate daylighting, thermal conditions, energy consumption, and natural ventilation before construction, supporting more informed architectural decisions. The study further considers the influence of emerging technologies on construction methods and architectural expression. Digital fabrication, 3D printing, prefabrication, and modular construction can provide opportunities for reducing construction waste, improving precision, shortening construction periods, and developing innovative building components. These technologies may also expand the range of architectural forms and construction solutions available to Nigerian practitioners. However, their application needs to consider local material availability, technical expertise, infrastructure, construction practices, and project costs. Several challenges may affect the adoption of emerging building technologies within the Nigerian architectural sector. These include high initial investment costs, limited access to advanced equipment, inadequate digital infrastructure, shortages of specialized skills, limited research and development, regulatory constraints, and resistance to changes in established construction practices. There is therefore a need for professional training, technological research, collaboration between academia and industry, supportive policies, and investment in digital and construction infrastructure. The study aims to assess the potential role of emerging building technologies in shaping the future of Nigerian architecture and identify opportunities for their effective integration into architectural practice. The findings are expected to provide useful insights for architects, engineers, researchers, developers, educators, policymakers, and construction professionals. Appropriate adoption of emerging technologies can support more efficient, sustainable, adaptable, and innovative architectural development while ensuring that technological advancement remains responsive to Nigeria's environmental, economic, cultural, and social conditions.
