The Role of Green Roofs in Improving Building Environmental Performance
Abstract
The increasing environmental challenges associated with rapid urbanization and building development have created a need for sustainable approaches to improving building performance. Conventional roofs can contribute to heat gain, increased indoor temperatures, stormwater runoff, and higher cooling energy demand, particularly in warm and densely developed urban areas. Green roofs provide a sustainable design strategy by incorporating vegetation and growing media on building roof surfaces. Their application can contribute to improved thermal performance, stormwater management, energy efficiency, and overall environmental sustainability. This study examines the role of green roofs in improving building environmental performance. Green roofs generally consist of vegetation, growing media, drainage layers, waterproofing systems, and protective components installed above a building's roof structure. Depending on their design and intended use, green roofs may be classified as extensive, intensive, or semi-intensive systems. The selection of an appropriate green roof system depends on factors such as building structure, climate, maintenance requirements, available space, and the desired environmental benefits. One of the major environmental benefits of green roofs is their ability to reduce heat transfer through the roof. Vegetation and growing media can provide shading and thermal resistance, while evapotranspiration can help reduce roof surface temperatures. These processes can contribute to lower indoor temperatures and reduce the cooling demand of buildings, particularly during periods of high solar radiation. Green roofs can therefore support improved thermal comfort and energy efficiency when appropriately designed and maintained. Green roofs can also contribute to improved stormwater management within urban areas. Vegetation and growing media can retain a portion of rainfall, slow the rate of water runoff, and allow some water to return to the atmosphere through evapotranspiration. This can reduce the volume and intensity of stormwater entering drainage systems during rainfall events. In addition, green roofs can provide ecological benefits by creating habitats for certain plants and insects and increasing the amount of vegetation within built-up environments. Despite these benefits, the implementation of green roofs may face challenges such as high initial installation costs, structural requirements, maintenance needs, water requirements, and limited technical expertise. The performance of green roofs can also vary depending on vegetation type, substrate depth, climatic conditions, roof design, and maintenance practices. Proper assessment of structural capacity, waterproofing, drainage, irrigation, and plant selection is therefore necessary to ensure effective long-term performance. This study assesses the role of green roofs in improving building environmental performance, focusing on thermal regulation, energy efficiency, stormwater management, and ecological benefits. The study is expected to identify the major advantages and limitations associated with green roof applications and examine the factors influencing their effectiveness. The findings will provide useful information for architects, engineers, landscape designers, developers, building owners, and policymakers interested in sustainable building practices. The study may contribute to the development of environmentally responsive buildings and greener urban environments.
