CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
The rise of digital media has transformed the way people consume news, with online newspapers becoming a popular source of information among young people (Pew Research Center, 2020). In Nigeria, the growth of online newspapers has been remarkable, with many traditional newspapers now having online editions (Okoro, 2019). Research has shown that online newspapers have become an essential part of the digital landscape, providing up-to-date news and information to a wide range of audiences (Newman et al., 2020).
The increasing popularity of online newspapers among young people is attributed to their convenience, accessibility, and flexibility (Kalogeropoulos et al., 2018). A study by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism found that 71% of young people in Nigeria access news online, with 45% using social media to access news (Reuters Institute, 2020). This shift towards online news consumption has significant implications for the way news is produced, disseminated, and consumed (Goggin, 2019).
Despite the growing popularity of online newspapers, there is a lack of research on how students perceive and utilize them. A study by the Pew Research Center found that 70% of adults in Nigeria get their news from social media, but there is limited research on how students engage with online newspapers (Pew Research Center, 2020). Understanding how students perceive online newspapers is essential in today's digital age, as it can provide insights into how they engage with news and information (Kenski et al., 2018).
Research has shown that students' perceptions of online newspapers are influenced by various factors, including their demographic characteristics, online experiences, and social media use (Kalogeropoulos et al., 2018). A study by the Knight Foundation found that students who use social media to access news are more likely to engage with online newspapers (Knight Foundation, 2019). However, there is limited research on how these factors influence students' perceptions of online newspapers in
