ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS THAT INFLUENCES STUDENTS ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN SELECTED SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ESAN WEST LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF EDO STATE
ABSTRACT
This study investigated the effect of learning environment on academic performance of secondary school students in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State. The population consists of 1000 respondents that are made up of 348 Teachers and 652 Students in Seventeen (17) Educational Zones in Edo State. The sampling comprises of 83 Teachers Staff and 152 Students in Ten (10) Educational Zones in Edo State. Stratified random sampling technique was used in selecting the sample. Data were collected using the researcher’s self-constructed questionnaire titled “The effect of learning environment on academic performance of secondary school students in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State Questionnaire ((TELEAPSSEWLGAABSQ)”.) from the respondents. Three research questions were formulated to guide the study, and three null hypotheses formulated to test the research hypothesis at 0.05 levels of significance. The simple percentage technique was used to answer the three research questions while Student T-test statistics was used to test the three null hypotheses formulated.Results indicated that: The state of learning environment prevalent in a school setting to a greater extent determines the level of academic performance of students. The teacher has a major role to play in ensuring an enabling learning environment particularly on how he manages the classroom and conducts professionally with students. It is the responsibility of government to ensure an enabling learning environment for a quality academic performance. The following recommendations were made: - That Teachers who are the first contact of students should be regularly trained in the accordance with best practices in ensuring effective classroom management. That government should ensure an adequate provision of infrastructural facilities, equipment and tools which will enable teachers to teach their subject areas effectively. That instructional materials needed for effective teaching and learning practice be provided include provision of adequate workshops, laboratories, classrooms to enable students acquire practical experience in the program. That monitoring and evaluation unit of the Ministry of Education should be strengthened to regularly supervise teachers in their general conduct of classroom management.
