STUDY THE CONTRIBUTIONS AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF DR. BASSEY EKONG AS WELL AS THEIR IMPACT ON THE NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Dr. Bassey Ekong is a renowned figure in the fields of medicine, education, and public health. His extensive contributions span across national and international spheres, impacting numerous lives through his work. This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of Dr. Ekong's contributions, accomplishments, and the significance of his work on both a national and global scale. By understanding his influence, we can better appreciate the role of individual contributions in shaping societal progress and development.

Dr. Bassey Udo Ekong was a transportation economist, administrator and scholar. He was born on December 24, 1935, to late Elder Udo Ekong Okon Umoudoe of Ikot Ntu & Madam Ikwo Efiong Okokon of Ikot Adakpan all in Oku Iboku, Itu, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. He was married with children. He died in the year 2009, after a fruitful 74 years, during which time he accomplished a lot at a personal level, and at the national and international levels. He studied at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where he received his first degree, and also at the Michigan State University in the United States of America where he obtained his M.sc degree in Economics as well as a Ph. D in Transport Economics. Dr. Bassey Udo Ekong contributed a lot to the development of the Nation, including pioneering sectors, leading in policy development, serving in special committees and tasks forces, chairing corporate institutions and boards at international, national and state levels. Among many others, in various capacities at the Central Bank of Nigeria, as a Research Assistant, Assistant Economist, Economist, Chief Economist, Assistant Director and eventually, the Deputy Director before he was appointed Executive Secretary, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, where he served for  few years before he returned to the CBN as Deputy Director of Research, Economic Policy Unit. As a transportation economist, he contributed immensely as well as served in various capacities in the Nigerian transportation sector, including pioneering work in the maritime and railway sectors.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite Dr. Bassey Ekong's significant contributions to society, there is a lack of comprehensive documentation and analysis of his work and its impact. This gap in literature limits the recognition and understanding of his contributions, thereby impeding the potential learning and inspiration that can be drawn from his achievements.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine the contributions and accomplishments of Dr. Bassey Ekong and their impact on national and international society. Specific objectives include:

i. To evaluate the impact of Dr. Bassey Ekong's contributions on national public health policies.

ii. To determine the influence of Dr. Bassey Ekong's educational initiatives on medical education.

iii. To find out the global recognition and influence of Dr. Bassey Ekong's work in international forums.

1.4 Research Questions

Based on the specific objectives, the study will address the following research questions:

i. What is the impact of Dr. Bassey Ekong's contributions on national public health policies?

ii. What is the influence of Dr. Bassey Ekong's educational initiatives on medical education?

iii. How does Dr. Bassey Ekong's work receive global recognition and influence international forums?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

The following hypotheses will guide this study:

Hypothesis I

H0: There is no significant impact of Dr. Bassey Ekong's contributions on national public health policies.

H1: There is a significant impact of Dr. Bassey Ekong's contributions on national public health policies.

Hypothesis II

H0: There is no significant influence of Dr. Bassey Ekong's educational initiatives on medical education.

H2: There is a significant influence of Dr. Bassey Ekong's educational initiatives on medical education.

Hypothesis III

H0: There is no significant global recognition and influence of Dr. Bassey Ekong's work in international forums.

H3: There is a significant global recognition and influence of Dr. Bassey Ekong's work in international forums.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant for several reasons. It will provide a detailed understanding of the contributions and accomplishments of Dr. Bassey Ekong, serving as a valuable resource for scholars, policymakers, and practitioners in public health and education. Additionally, it will highlight the importance of individual contributions in fostering societal development, potentially inspiring future generations to pursue impactful careers.

1.7 Scope of the Study
