CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) plays a crucial role in global efforts to monitor and regulate nuclear activities. As nuclear technology continues to advance, concerns over nuclear weapons proliferation and their impact on international security have become increasingly significant. Understanding the role of the IAEA in this context is essential for comprehending global efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons.

This study appraises the efforts of the International Atomic Energy Agency in tackling the issues bordering on the proliferation of nuclear weapons. Without doubt, the proliferation of nuclear weapons is one of the problems that have continued to threaten international security. The realist assumption that peace is guaranteed by arming one’s self to the teeth and always being ready for war has somewhat made the quest for acquisition of nuclear weapons appear lofty. Air Max 2016 Heren Goedkoop From the time the international community realized that nuclear weapons have potentially dangerous implications for the safety of mankind, a lot of measures has been put in place to control and regulate the possession of these weapons. These among other measures included the Non Proliferation Treaty which inter alia sought to safeguard regions and continents against the threats of nuclear weapons.  In order to give institutional power to the fight against the proliferation of nuclear weapons, the International Atomic Energy Agency was established in 1957. Over the years, the International Atomic Energy Agency under the mandate of the united nations security council has developed a structure that has been considerably efficient in the vital role of controlling and regulating the nuclear energy/weapons regime; although, not without its challenges. An assessment of the role of the International Atomic Energy agency in the regulation of the nuclear weapons proliferation forms the crux of this study.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite international efforts facilitated by the IAEA, nuclear weapons proliferation remains a persistent threat to global security. The challenge lies in assessing the effectiveness of the IAEA's strategies and mechanisms in curbing the spread of nuclear weapons and ensuring international security.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine the impact of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on nuclear weapons proliferation and international security. Specific objectives include:

i. To evaluate the impact of IAEA's inspection and verification regimes on preventing illicit nuclear weapons development.

ii. To determine the effectiveness of IAEA's safeguards agreements in promoting transparency and accountability among member states.

iii. To find out the challenges faced by the IAEA in addressing emerging nuclear proliferation threats.

1.4 Research Questions

i. What is the impact of IAEA's inspection and verification regimes on preventing illicit nuclear weapons development?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides insights into the effectiveness of the IAEA's efforts in mitigating nuclear weapons proliferation, thereby contributing to international security and peacekeeping efforts worldwide.

1.7 Scope of the Study

This study focuses on the activities of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) related to nuclear weapons proliferation and international security. It includes an analysis of IAEA's inspection regimes, safeguards agreements, and challenges in addressing emerging nuclear proliferation threats.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

Limitations may include the availability of comprehensive data from all member states, varying levels of cooperation from different countries, and potential constraints in accessing sensitive information related to nuclear activities.
