INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Access to quality dental care is a critical aspect of healthcare, contributing to the overall well-being and quality of life of individuals. Dental restorative procedures, such as dentures and dental implants, play a crucial role in restoring oral health, functionality, and aesthetics for individuals with missing or damaged teeth. However, in many resource-limited settings, including Nigeria, the cost and limited availability of imported dental materials pose significant barriers to accessing these essential dental restorations.

Nigeria, as the most populous country in Africa, faces numerous challenges in providing affordable and accessible dental care to its citizens. The high cost of dental prostheses, largely due to the reliance on imported materials, often makes these treatments unaffordable for a significant portion of the population. Furthermore, the limited availability of dental laboratories capable of producing high-quality dental restorations further exacerbates the issue. As a result, many individuals in Nigeria suffer from the adverse effects of untreated dental conditions, affecting their overall health, self-esteem, and quality of life.

To address these challenges, innovative approaches are needed to develop cost-effective and locally accessible solutions for dental restorative practice in Nigeria. One such approach involves the use of local raw materials and animal bone to simulate the production of human teeth and dental implants. By harnessing the resources readily available within the country, this approach has the potential to overcome the limitations imposed by expensive imported materials, improve affordability, and increase accessibility to dental restorations for a larger portion of the population.

The use of local raw materials in dental restorative practice offers several potential advantages. Proper processing and sterilization techniques can render animal bone safe and suitable for dental applications, thereby expanding the options for dental practitioners and patients in Nigeria.

This research aims to explore the feasibility and efficacy of using local raw materials and animal bone to simulate the production of human teeth for dental restorative practice in Nigeria. By investigating the mechanical and aesthetic properties of locally sourced materials, researchers can determine their suitability as substitutes for traditional dental materials. Laboratory experiments and clinical evaluations will be conducted to assess factors such as hardness, color stability, biocompatibility, and resistance to wear, ensuring that the fabricated dental restorations meet the necessary standards for effective and safe use.

The outcomes of this research have the potential to revolutionize dental care in Nigeria. By harnessing local resources and developing cost-effective alternatives, dental restorative procedures can become more accessible, affordable, and sustainable. Moreover, the use of local raw materials and animal bone can stimulate economic growth by
