ANALYSIS OF TRENDS AND PATTERNS OF POVERTY IN NIGERIA (2020-2024)

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Poverty is a pervasive issue that affects many countries globally, and Nigeria is no exception. Despite being rich in natural resources and having a rapidly growing economy, Nigeria continues to grapple with high levels of poverty. According to the World Bank (2023), about 40.1% of Nigerians lived below the national poverty line in 2021, highlighting a persistent trend of economic disparity (World Bank, 2023). This situation raises crucial questions about the factors contributing to poverty in Nigeria, the effectiveness of policies aimed at alleviating it, and the changing dynamics of poverty from 2020 to 2024.

The Nigerian economy has experienced fluctuations due to various factors, including fluctuating oil prices, insecurity, and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic disrupted economic activities, leading to job losses and a decline in household incomes, particularly among vulnerable populations (Adediran et al., 2022). The Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) initiated by the Nigerian government aimed to address these issues and stimulate growth, but challenges remain significant (Nigerian Economic Summit Group, 2021).

Additionally, the rise of informal employment, urban migration, and the increasing cost of living have exacerbated the poverty situation in Nigeria. Many Nigerians depend on informal jobs that provide low wages and lack job security, which further entrench the cycle of poverty (Adepoju, 2022). The urbanization trend has led to increased pressure on city infrastructures, making it challenging for urban migrants to access basic services such as housing, education, and healthcare, all of which are critical to breaking the cycle of poverty (Ogunkola, 2021).

Understanding the patterns and trends of poverty in Nigeria from 2020 to 2024 is vital for developing effective policies. Identifying the demographics most affected by poverty, such as women, children, and rural dwellers, can help tailor interventions to support these groups. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (2021), women and children are disproportionately affected by poverty, emphasizing the need for gender-sensitive policies (National Bureau of Statistics, 2021).

Furthermore, the government has introduced several social intervention programs aimed at poverty alleviation, such as the National Social Investment Program (NSIP) and the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) program. However, their effectiveness and reach have been the subject of debate, with critics arguing that these programs often fail to address the root causes of poverty (Ogunleye, 2023). For instance, the lack of proper targeting and monitoring mechanisms has hindered the success of these initiatives, leading to questions about their sustainability and impact.

Recent studies have begun to analyze the effectiveness of these interventions and explore the socioeconomic factors contributing to poverty in Nigeria. Factors such as education, health, and access to social services are critical in determining poverty levels (Oladipo & Balogun, 2022). A more comprehensive understanding of these trends and patterns will enable policymakers to devise strategies that not only alleviate poverty but also promote sustainable development.

Overall, the analysis of poverty trends and patterns in Nigeria from 2020 to 2024 presents a multifaceted challenge requiring a nuanced understanding of economic, social, and political factors. It is essential to examine how these factors interact and influence poverty levels across different regions and demographics in Nigeria. This study aims to contribute to this understanding by providing an in-depth analysis of current poverty trends, evaluating the impact of government interventions, and offering recommendations for future policies to reduce poverty in Nigeria.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The persistent high rates of poverty in Nigeria present a significant challenge to national development and social stability. Despite numerous policies and programs aimed at alleviating poverty, millions of Nigerians continue to live in extreme poverty, facing daily challenges related to basic needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare. The problem is compounded by a lack of comprehensive data on the trends and patterns of poverty, making it difficult for policymakers to design effective interventions. Additionally, the socioeconomic factors that drive poverty remain poorly understood, further complicating efforts to develop targeted solutions. This study aims to fill these gaps by analyzing the trends and patterns of poverty in Nigeria from 2020 to 2024, thereby providing essential insights for policymakers and stakeholders.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

The main objective of this study is to determine the trends and patterns of poverty in Nigeria from 2020 to 2024.

Specific objectives include:

i. To evaluate the impact of socioeconomic factors on poverty levels in Nigeria.

ii. To determine the effectiveness of government policies and interventions in reducing poverty.

iii. To find out the demographic groups most affected by poverty in Nigeria.

1.4 Research Questions

1.5 Research Hypotheses

Hypothesis I

H0: There is no significant impact of socioeconomic factors on poverty levels in Nigeria.
H1: There is a significant impact of socioeconomic factors on poverty levels in Nigeria.

Hypothesis II

H0: There is no significant effectiveness of government policies and interventions in reducing poverty.
H2: There is a significant effectiveness of government policies and interventions in reducing poverty.

Hypothesis III

H0: There is no significant difference in poverty levels among different demographic groups in Nigeria.
H3: There is a significant difference in poverty levels among different demographic groups in Nigeria.

1.6 Significance of the Study

1.7 Scope of the Study

The study will focus on the trends and patterns of poverty in Nigeria from 2020 to 2024. It will examine socioeconomic factors, government policies, and demographic variables influencing poverty levels. The research will encompass various regions within Nigeria to provide a comprehensive overview of the poverty landscape. However, the study will primarily rely on secondary data sources, which may limit the depth of qualitative insights.

1.8 Limitations of the Study

This study faces several limitations, including the reliance on secondary data, which may not fully capture the complexities of poverty in Nigeria. Additionally, the rapidly changing economic and social conditions in Nigeria may affect the relevance of the findings over time. The study may also encounter challenges related to data availability and reliability, particularly concerning the implementation and impact of government policies. Despite these limitations, the study aims to provide a thorough analysis of poverty trends in Nigeria.

1.9 Definition of Terms

Poverty: A state where individuals lack sufficient income and resources to meet their basic needs, including food, shelter, and healthcare.

Socioeconomic Factors: Economic and social conditions that influence an individual's or community's economic status, including income, education, employment, and access to social services.

Government Policies: Strategies and measures implemented by government authorities to address specific issues, in this case, poverty alleviation programs.

Demographic Groups: Categories of people classified based on shared characteristics such as age, gender, income level, and geographic location.

Informal Employment: Jobs that are not regulated by the government, often characterized by low wages, lack of job security, and absence of social benefits.
