Effect of Emergency Contact Education on Emergency Preparedness Practices among University Hostel Residents in Nigeria

Abstract

Emergencies such as fires, medical emergencies, accidents, injuries, security incidents, and other unexpected events may occur within university hostels and require rapid communication with appropriate emergency services. Prompt access to accurate emergency contact information can facilitate timely reporting, improve coordination, and reduce delays in obtaining assistance. However, university hostel residents may have limited awareness of relevant emergency contacts, uncertainty about which services to contact, difficulty accessing emergency numbers, or inadequate knowledge of the information that should be provided during an emergency. Emergency contact education provides an opportunity to improve residents' knowledge and preparedness for communicating effectively during emergency situations. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of emergency contact education on emergency preparedness practices among university hostel residents in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Protection Motivation Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how hostel residents' perceptions of susceptibility to emergencies, perceived severity of emergency consequences, perceived benefits of knowing and using emergency contacts, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence preparedness behaviours. Protection Motivation Theory explains how perceived emergency threats, response efficacy, response costs, and self-efficacy may influence residents' motivation to adopt appropriate emergency preparedness practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing and maintaining effective emergency-response behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how emergency contact education may influence emergency preparedness practices among university hostel residents in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students residing in selected university hostels across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, campuses, hostels, blocks, rooms, and eligible residents. Emergency contact education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to emergency contact education sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of relevant emergency services, awareness of medical emergency contacts, fire and rescue contacts, police and security contacts, campus security contacts, university health-service contacts, hostel management contacts, knowledge of how and when to contact each service, awareness of emergency communication procedures, and knowledge of essential information to provide when reporting an emergency. Emergency preparedness practices will be assessed using indicators such as availability of emergency contact numbers in personal devices, storage of emergency contacts in accessible locations, ability to identify the appropriate service for different emergencies, knowledge of hostel emergency procedures, awareness of emergency exits and assembly points, participation in emergency drills, communication with hostel authorities during emergencies, prompt reporting of hazards, and ability to provide accurate location and incident information when seeking assistance. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, emergency preparedness knowledge assessment tools, hostel observation checklists, emergency contact availability checklists, hostel emergency records, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic and academic characteristics, hostel living conditions, exposure to emergency education, knowledge of emergency contacts, and preparedness practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of emergency contact education on emergency preparedness practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, preparedness practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that emergency contact education has a significant positive effect on emergency preparedness practices among university hostel residents in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical emergency contact education are expected to demonstrate better knowledge and preparedness than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve residents' ability to identify appropriate emergency services, store relevant contact numbers, report incidents promptly, communicate accurate information, and follow established hostel emergency procedures. Practical demonstrations, emergency simulations, orientation programmes, posters, digital reminders, and collaboration with university security and health services may further strengthen residents' confidence and preparedness. However, outdated emergency contact information, unreliable communication networks, limited awareness of campus emergency procedures, inadequate emergency-response infrastructure, and uncertainty regarding the appropriate authority to contact may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, regularly updated, and institutionally supported emergency contact education to contribute significantly to improved emergency preparedness practices among university hostel residents in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on emergency preparedness, university hostel safety, emergency communication, student health and safety, injury prevention, disaster preparedness, health education, campus safety, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Emergency Management Agency, universities, university health services, campus security departments, hostel management authorities, emergency response agencies, fire and rescue services, police and security organizations, public health practitioners, student affairs departments, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening emergency preparedness within university residential environments. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating emergency contact education into student orientation programmes, displaying updated emergency contact information in hostels, strengthening campus emergency communication systems, conducting regular emergency drills, improving coordination between university authorities and emergency services, and developing sustainable emergency preparedness programmes for university hostel residents across Nigeria.
