Effect of Household Waste-Sorting Education on Waste-Sorting Practices among Urban Households in Nigeria
Abstract
Improper household waste management remains an important environmental and public health concern in urban communities in Nigeria. Rapid population growth, urbanization, increasing household consumption, inadequate waste-collection systems, poor disposal practices, and limited public participation in waste management may contribute to environmental pollution and associated health risks. Household waste that is not properly separated may reduce opportunities for recycling and recovery, increase the volume of waste requiring final disposal, and contribute to littering, blocked drainage systems, unpleasant odours, and potential exposure to environmental hazards. Waste-sorting education provides an opportunity to improve households' understanding of waste classification, separation, storage, recycling, and appropriate disposal practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of household waste-sorting education on waste-sorting practices among urban households in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how household residents' perceptions of the environmental and health consequences of improper waste management, perceived benefits of waste sorting, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence waste-sorting practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, social support, and environmental influences in shaping household waste-management behaviour. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, household, community, environmental, infrastructural, economic, and policy factors on waste-sorting behaviour. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how waste-sorting education may influence waste-sorting practices among urban households in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adults aged 18 years and above who are responsible for or participate in household waste management in selected urban communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, urban local government areas, communities, residential areas, households, and eligible respondents. Household waste-sorting education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on waste classification, separation of organic and recyclable materials, hazardous household waste, reusable materials, storage of separated waste, recycling, composting where appropriate, safe handling of waste, environmental and health consequences of improper disposal, local waste-collection procedures, and available waste-management services. Waste-sorting practices will be assessed using indicators such as separation of waste at source, use of separate containers, identification and separation of recyclable materials, separation of organic waste where applicable, appropriate handling of hazardous household waste, proper storage of sorted waste, participation in recycling or recovery programmes, compliance with local waste-collection requirements, and prevention of indiscriminate disposal. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized waste-sorting knowledge and practice assessment tools, household observation checklists, waste-management records where available, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize households' demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, household waste-generation patterns, sources of environmental-health information, education exposure, and waste-sorting practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of household waste-sorting education on waste-sorting practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, waste-sorting practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that household waste-sorting education has a significant positive effect on waste-sorting practices among urban households in Nigeria. Households exposed to structured, practical, culturally appropriate, and sustained waste-sorting education are expected to demonstrate better waste-separation practices than households without comparable exposure. Education may improve residents' ability to distinguish recyclable, organic, general, and potentially hazardous household waste and encourage appropriate separation at the point of generation. Practical demonstrations may improve residents' confidence in using separate containers, storing sorted waste safely, participating in recycling activities, and complying with local waste-collection procedures. Education may also increase awareness of the environmental and health consequences of indiscriminate waste disposal, including blocked drainage, flooding, pest proliferation, unpleasant environmental conditions, and potential exposure to hazardous materials. However, inadequate waste-collection infrastructure, limited availability of separate collection services, lack of recycling facilities, additional household costs, limited space for waste storage, inconsistent collection schedules, and weak enforcement of waste-management regulations may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, sustained, and community-oriented waste-sorting education, supported by functional waste-collection and recycling systems, to contribute significantly to improved waste-sorting practices among urban households in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on household waste management, waste sorting, environmental health, recycling, solid waste management, health education, environmental behaviour, urban sanitation, community health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Environment, state environmental protection agencies, local government authorities, waste-management companies, environmental health officers, community development organizations, recycling organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving household participation in sustainable waste management. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening household waste-sorting education, improving access to separate waste-collection services, expanding recycling infrastructure, providing appropriate waste containers, increasing community environmental-health awareness, strengthening collaboration between households and waste-management providers, and developing sustainable urban waste-management interventions that promote proper waste sorting and environmental health across Nigeria.
