Effect of Online Fitness Programme Participation on Exercise Practices among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Physical inactivity is an important public health concern among university students in Nigeria because academic demands, sedentary lifestyles, prolonged screen use, limited recreational facilities, financial constraints, and competing social activities may reduce opportunities for regular exercise. Regular physical activity is important for maintaining physical fitness, supporting mental well-being, improving cardiovascular health, and reducing the risk of several non-communicable diseases. Online fitness programmes have emerged as an accessible approach to promoting exercise through digital platforms that provide workout videos, virtual classes, exercise schedules, fitness challenges, instructional guidance, and progress-monitoring features. These programmes may allow students to participate in exercise activities from hostels, homes, campuses, or other convenient locations. However, participation may be influenced by motivation, internet access, availability of appropriate equipment, programme quality, digital literacy, and students' ability to maintain regular exercise routines. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of online fitness programme participation on exercise practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Social Cognitive Theory, Technology Acceptance Model, and Theory of Planned Behavior. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-efficacy, observational learning, goal-setting, reinforcement, self-monitoring, and environmental influences in developing and maintaining exercise behaviours. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and acceptance of online fitness platforms may influence students' participation and continued engagement. The Theory of Planned Behavior emphasizes attitudes toward exercise, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions in shaping students' exercise practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how online fitness programme participation may influence exercise practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students aged 18 years and above enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible participants. Online fitness programme participation will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of programme participation, duration of participation, type of online fitness programme, number of exercise sessions completed, use of live or recorded workout sessions, participation in fitness challenges, use of exercise schedules, access to fitness instructors, use of progress-monitoring features, and consistency of programme engagement. Exercise practices will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of physical activity, duration of exercise sessions, intensity of exercise, participation in aerobic and muscle-strengthening activities, regularity of weekly exercise, adherence to recommended physical activity routines, warm-up and cool-down practices, exercise planning, and maintenance of personal exercise schedules. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized physical activity and exercise-practice assessment tools, online fitness programme participation records where accessible and appropriately consented to, activity logs, and relevant university health or sports programme records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, physical activity patterns, sources of fitness information, online programme participation, and exercise practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of online fitness programme participation on exercise practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, exercise-practice scores before and after participation in an online fitness programme may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that online fitness programme participation has a significant positive effect on exercise practices among university students in Nigeria. Students who participate regularly in structured online fitness programmes are expected to demonstrate more consistent exercise practices than students without comparable access. Online fitness programmes may provide convenient access to guided workouts, exercise schedules, demonstrations, reminders, challenges, and progress feedback, thereby helping students overcome some barriers associated with limited time and access to physical fitness facilities. Participation may also improve students' confidence in performing exercises correctly and encourage regular physical activity through goal-setting and self-monitoring. However, inconsistent participation, poor internet connectivity, limited access to exercise equipment, lack of adequate space, academic workload, low motivation, programme quality, and difficulty sustaining online engagement may reduce the effectiveness of online fitness programmes. The study therefore expects accessible, engaging, evidence-based, and well-structured online fitness programmes, supported by appropriate physical activity education and safe exercise guidance, to contribute significantly to improved exercise practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on online fitness programmes, physical activity, exercise practices, digital health, health promotion, university student health, sedentary behaviour prevention, mobile health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, university sports departments, university health centres, fitness professionals, healthcare providers, digital-health developers, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting physical activity among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating online fitness programmes into university health-promotion initiatives, improving access to reliable digital exercise resources, promoting safe and appropriate exercise practices, strengthening student engagement with physical activity programmes, combining online fitness interventions with campus-based recreational opportunities, and developing culturally appropriate digital physical-activity interventions for university students across Nigeria.
