Effect of Wearable Fitness Tracker Education on Physical Activity Monitoring among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Physical inactivity is an important public health concern because inadequate physical activity may increase the risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and other chronic health conditions. University students may experience low levels of physical activity because of academic demands, prolonged sitting, extensive screen use, transportation habits, and limited participation in structured exercise. Wearable fitness trackers, including smartwatches and activity-monitoring devices, provide opportunities for individuals to monitor steps, physical activity duration, exercise frequency, heart rate, and other activity-related indicators. However, limited knowledge of how to correctly use, interpret, and apply information generated by wearable fitness trackers may reduce their usefulness for physical activity monitoring. Wearable fitness tracker education provides an opportunity to improve students' knowledge and skills in using these devices and interpreting activity data for personal health monitoring. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of wearable fitness tracker education on physical activity monitoring among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Technology Acceptance Model. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of the health risks associated with physical inactivity, perceived benefits of physical activity monitoring, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their use of wearable fitness trackers. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-efficacy, observational learning, behavioural modelling, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing regular physical activity monitoring practices. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, attitudes, and acceptance of wearable fitness technology may influence students' willingness to use fitness trackers for monitoring physical activity. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how wearable fitness tracker education may influence physical activity monitoring among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students aged 18 years and above enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, levels of study, and eligible students. Wearable fitness tracker education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of training, knowledge of wearable fitness trackers, device setup, correct wearing procedures, synchronization with mobile applications, interpretation of activity data, understanding of step counts, active minutes, exercise duration, heart-rate information, goal setting, data recording, device maintenance, and awareness of limitations of wearable fitness measurements. Physical activity monitoring will be assessed using indicators such as frequency of monitoring, consistency of device use, daily step tracking, monitoring of active minutes, recording of exercise duration and frequency, tracking of physical activity goals, review of activity data, identification of periods of inactivity, use of activity information to modify exercise behaviour, and maintenance of regular physical activity records. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, wearable fitness tracker-use assessment tools, physical activity monitoring records, device-generated activity summaries where available, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic characteristics, technology-use patterns, physical activity levels, wearable-device ownership or access, and physical activity monitoring practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of wearable fitness tracker education on physical activity monitoring. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, physical activity monitoring scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that wearable fitness tracker education has a significant positive effect on physical activity monitoring among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and practical wearable fitness tracker education are expected to demonstrate more consistent monitoring of their physical activity than students without comparable education. Training may improve students' ability to correctly use wearable devices, interpret activity data, set realistic physical activity goals, identify periods of prolonged inactivity, and use monitoring information to support healthier activity patterns. Practical demonstrations may also improve students' confidence in using wearable technology and encourage regular review of activity data. However, high cost of wearable devices, limited access to compatible smartphones, device accuracy concerns, battery limitations, technical difficulties, loss or damage of devices, low motivation, inconsistent use, and privacy concerns may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects practical, accessible, and technology-oriented wearable fitness tracker education, supported by appropriate access to wearable devices and digital resources, to contribute significantly to improved physical activity monitoring among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on wearable health technology, physical activity monitoring, digital health education, health promotion, physical activity, technology-assisted health behaviour, student health, non-communicable disease prevention, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, healthcare professionals, public health practitioners, digital health organizations, technology developers, student health services, development partners, and policymakers regarding the use of wearable technologies for promoting physical activity. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating wearable fitness tracker education into university health-promotion programmes, improving students' digital health and self-monitoring skills, encouraging regular physical activity monitoring, promoting responsible use of wearable health technologies, and developing sustainable technology-supported physical activity interventions among university students across Nigeria.

I actually googled and saw about iproject master, copied the number and contacted them through WhatsApp to ask for the availability of the material and to my luck they have it. So there was a delay with the project due to the covid19 pandemic. I was really scared before making the payment cause I’ve been scammed twice, they attended so well to me and that made me trust the process and made the payment and provided them with proof, I got my material in less than 10minutes
