Effect of Workplace Fatigue Education on Fatigue-Prevention Practices among Factory Workers in Nigeria
Abstract
Workplace fatigue is an important occupational health and safety concern among factory workers because prolonged working hours, shift work, inadequate rest, physically demanding tasks, repetitive activities, poor working conditions, and insufficient recovery time may contribute to physical and mental exhaustion. Workplace fatigue may reduce concentration, impair decision-making, slow reaction time, increase errors, and increase the risk of occupational accidents and injuries. Factory workers may not always recognize the early signs of fatigue or understand appropriate strategies for preventing and managing work-related exhaustion. Workplace fatigue education provides an opportunity to improve workers' knowledge of fatigue-related risks and promote appropriate fatigue-prevention practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of workplace fatigue education on fatigue-prevention practices among factory workers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Job Demands-Resources Model. The Health Belief Model explains how workers' perceptions of susceptibility to fatigue-related accidents, perceived severity of fatigue consequences, perceived benefits of fatigue-prevention measures, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence preventive practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and workplace environmental influences in developing and maintaining appropriate fatigue-management behaviours. The Job Demands-Resources Model explains how excessive job demands, including long working hours, workload, shift work, and physically demanding tasks, may contribute to fatigue, while adequate rest, supportive supervision, appropriate work schedules, and other workplace resources may reduce its effects. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how workplace fatigue education may influence fatigue-prevention practices among factory workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise factory workers employed in selected manufacturing and industrial establishments across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, industrial areas, factories, departments, work units, shifts, and eligible workers. Workplace fatigue education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to fatigue education sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of causes and consequences of workplace fatigue, awareness of fatigue warning signs, knowledge of the effects of inadequate sleep and rest, understanding of appropriate work-rest schedules, knowledge of hydration and nutrition practices, awareness of safe shift-work practices, knowledge of strategies for maintaining alertness, and awareness of the importance of reporting excessive fatigue to supervisors. Fatigue-prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as taking scheduled rest breaks, obtaining adequate sleep before work, observing appropriate work-rest schedules, maintaining hydration, using appropriate strategies to manage fatigue, avoiding unsafe work when excessively fatigued, reporting fatigue to supervisors, following shift-related safety procedures, participating in workplace fatigue-management programmes, and using available rest facilities appropriately. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, fatigue knowledge assessment tools, fatigue-prevention practice instruments, workplace observation checklists, work-schedule records, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' demographic and occupational characteristics, working hours, shift patterns, exposure to fatigue education, and fatigue-prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of workplace fatigue education on fatigue-prevention practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, fatigue-prevention practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that workplace fatigue education has a significant positive effect on fatigue-prevention practices among factory workers in Nigeria. Workers exposed to structured and practical fatigue education are expected to demonstrate improved awareness of fatigue risks and greater adoption of appropriate fatigue-prevention practices than workers without comparable exposure. Education may improve workers' ability to recognize early signs of fatigue, appreciate the importance of adequate rest and sleep, take appropriate breaks, maintain hydration, report excessive fatigue, and avoid performing hazardous tasks when their alertness is impaired. Practical education supported by workplace demonstrations and supervisor involvement may further strengthen workers' confidence in applying fatigue-prevention strategies. However, excessive workloads, long working hours, inadequate staffing, poorly designed shift schedules, production pressures, limited rest facilities, and workplace cultures that discourage reporting fatigue may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects continuous and practical workplace fatigue education, supported by appropriate work scheduling, adequate rest periods, supportive supervision, and effective occupational health and safety policies, to contribute significantly to improved fatigue-prevention practices among factory workers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational health, workplace fatigue, industrial safety, occupational injury prevention, worker health education, shift-work safety, workplace risk management, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, occupational health and safety regulators, manufacturing companies, factory managers, occupational health professionals, safety officers, workers' organizations, public health practitioners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing fatigue-related occupational risks. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening workplace fatigue education, improving work-rest schedules, promoting adequate rest breaks, strengthening fatigue reporting systems, improving shift-work management, providing appropriate rest facilities, and integrating fatigue management into occupational health and safety programmes across Nigerian factories.
