Impact of Caffeine-Use Education on Healthy Caffeine Consumption Practices among Young Adults in Nigeria

Abstract

Caffeine consumption is common among young adults in Nigeria through coffee, tea, energy drinks, soft drinks, chocolate products, and other caffeinated beverages or products. While moderate caffeine consumption may be tolerated by many individuals, excessive or inappropriate use may be associated with sleep disturbance, anxiety, palpitations, gastrointestinal discomfort, dependence, and other adverse effects in susceptible individuals. Young adults may consume caffeine to remain alert during academic activities, work, social activities, or prolonged periods of wakefulness and may have limited awareness of caffeine content, cumulative intake, recommended limits, interactions with other substances, and potential effects of excessive consumption. Caffeine-use education provides an opportunity to improve young adults' understanding of caffeine and promote informed and healthier consumption practices. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of caffeine-use education on healthy caffeine consumption practices among young adults in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how young adults' perceptions of the benefits and risks of caffeine consumption, perceived susceptibility to adverse effects, perceived severity, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence caffeine-use practices. The Theory of Planned Behavior emphasizes attitudes toward caffeine consumption, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions as determinants of consumption behaviour. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, peer influence, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental factors in shaping caffeine-consumption practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how caffeine-use education may influence healthy caffeine consumption practices among young adults in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise young adults aged 18–35 years residing in selected urban and semi-urban communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, households, workplaces, educational institutions, and eligible young adults. Caffeine-use education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on common caffeine sources, caffeine content of beverages and products, recognition of high-caffeine products, recommended consumption limits, effects of excessive caffeine intake, sleep-related effects, dependence and withdrawal, interactions with medications or other substances, safe timing of caffeine consumption, label interpretation, and appropriate alternatives to excessive caffeine use. Healthy caffeine consumption practices will be assessed using indicators such as moderate caffeine intake, awareness of personal caffeine consumption, avoidance of excessive consumption, appropriate timing of caffeine intake, reading caffeine-content labels, avoidance of combining multiple high-caffeine products, reduction of caffeine use close to bedtime, recognition of adverse effects, appropriate response to caffeine-related symptoms, and avoidance of unsafe caffeine-use practices. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized caffeine-use knowledge and practice assessment tools, beverage-consumption records or recall measures, product-label assessment where appropriate, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, sources and frequency of caffeine consumption, common caffeinated products, education exposure, caffeine knowledge, and consumption practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of caffeine-use education on healthy caffeine consumption practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, healthy caffeine-consumption practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that caffeine-use education has a significant positive impact on healthy caffeine consumption practices among young adults in Nigeria. Young adults exposed to structured, evidence-based, practical, and sustained caffeine-use education are expected to demonstrate healthier caffeine-consumption practices than those without comparable exposure. Education may improve participants' ability to identify common sources of caffeine, understand caffeine content, recognize high-caffeine products, monitor cumulative intake, and understand the potential effects of excessive consumption on sleep and wellbeing. It may also encourage appropriate timing of caffeine intake, reduce consumption close to bedtime, and discourage the simultaneous use of multiple high-caffeine products. Practical education may help participants interpret product labels and recognize symptoms that may warrant reducing caffeine consumption or seeking professional advice. However, academic and occupational demands, peer influence, commercial marketing, availability of energy drinks and other caffeinated products, habitual consumption, sleep deprivation, and the perception that caffeine is necessary for productivity may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, evidence-based, and sustained caffeine-use education to contribute significantly to improved healthy caffeine consumption practices among young adults in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on caffeine consumption, energy-drink use, health education, young adult health, nutrition, sleep health, substance-use prevention, health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities and other educational institutions, workplaces, healthcare professionals, nutritionists, public health practitioners, youth-health organizations, consumer-health agencies, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting safer caffeine consumption. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating caffeine-use education into university and workplace health programmes, improving awareness of caffeine content and consumption limits, promoting responsible energy-drink use, strengthening nutrition and health literacy, encouraging healthy sleep practices, and developing sustainable health-education interventions that promote informed caffeine consumption among young adults across Nigeria.
