Impact of Calorie-Tracking Education on Dietary Monitoring Practices among Young Adults in Nigeria
Abstract
Dietary monitoring is an important component of nutrition and public health because awareness of food and energy intake may support healthier eating patterns and help individuals make informed dietary decisions. Among young adults in Nigeria, dietary practices may be influenced by changing lifestyles, increased consumption of processed and convenience foods, irregular meal patterns, limited nutrition knowledge, financial constraints, and increasing reliance on digital platforms for health information. Calorie-tracking tools and applications can help users record food intake, estimate energy consumption, monitor dietary patterns, and establish personal nutrition goals. However, some young adults may lack adequate knowledge of how calorie tracking works, how to interpret calorie information, or how to use calorie estimates appropriately without developing unhealthy or overly restrictive eating behaviours. Calorie-tracking education provides an opportunity to improve understanding of energy intake, balanced dietary monitoring, portion awareness, and responsible use of calorie-tracking tools. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of calorie-tracking education on dietary monitoring practices among young adults in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Health Literacy Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how young adults' perceptions of susceptibility to diet-related health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of dietary monitoring, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their dietary practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-monitoring, self-efficacy, goal-setting, observational learning, feedback, reinforcement, and environmental influences in developing and maintaining healthy dietary behaviours. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes individuals' ability to access, understand, evaluate, and appropriately apply information concerning calories, food portions, nutritional composition, and dietary monitoring. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how calorie-tracking education may influence dietary monitoring practices among young adults in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise young adults aged 18–35 years residing in selected urban, semi-urban, and rural communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, universities, workplaces, and eligible participants. Calorie-tracking education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, understanding of calorie concepts, energy requirements, portion sizes, food composition, calorie estimation, interpretation of nutrition labels, use of calorie-tracking applications, recognition of limitations in calorie estimates, balanced dietary monitoring, and responsible goal-setting. Dietary monitoring practices will be assessed using indicators such as recording food and beverage intake, monitoring portion sizes, reviewing calorie and nutrient information, identifying patterns of excessive or inadequate intake, comparing daily or weekly dietary patterns, setting realistic dietary goals, monitoring progress, considering overall nutritional quality rather than calories alone, and using dietary information to support healthier food choices. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized dietary monitoring assessment tools, food-frequency or dietary-recall instruments, calorie-tracking records where accessible and appropriately consented to, and relevant health or nutrition programme records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, dietary patterns, sources of nutrition information, calorie-tracking exposure, and dietary monitoring practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of calorie-tracking education on dietary monitoring practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, dietary monitoring scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that calorie-tracking education has a significant positive impact on dietary monitoring practices among young adults in Nigeria. Young adults exposed to structured and evidence-based calorie-tracking education are expected to demonstrate more consistent and appropriate dietary monitoring practices than those without comparable exposure. Education may improve understanding of calorie intake, portion sizes, food composition, energy requirements, and the limitations of calorie estimates. Practical education may encourage participants to record their food intake accurately, interpret nutrition labels, monitor dietary patterns, and establish realistic nutrition goals. It may also help young adults understand that healthy dietary monitoring should consider overall nutritional quality, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, protein, fibre, healthy fats, and adequate hydration, rather than focusing exclusively on calorie reduction. However, inaccurate food databases, difficulty estimating portion sizes, financial constraints, cultural dietary patterns, inconsistent use of tracking tools, limited nutrition literacy, and potential overemphasis on calorie restriction may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, and sustained calorie-tracking education to contribute significantly to improved dietary monitoring practices among young adults in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on calorie tracking, dietary monitoring, nutrition education, nutrition literacy, digital health, healthy eating, dietary behaviour, weight-related health, young-adult health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, workplaces, nutritionists, dietitians, healthcare professionals, public health practitioners, digital-health developers, youth-health organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving dietary monitoring among young adults. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating calorie-tracking education into nutrition and health-promotion programmes, improving nutrition literacy, promoting balanced dietary monitoring, encouraging appropriate interpretation of calorie information, strengthening access to reliable nutrition resources, and developing culturally appropriate digital and community-based nutrition interventions for young adults across Nigeria.
