Impact of Cognitive Behavioural Education on Coping Skills among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
University students in Nigeria may experience academic pressure, financial difficulties, relationship challenges, social adjustment, family responsibilities, and uncertainty about their future, which can create significant emotional and psychological demands. Inadequate coping skills may make it difficult for students to manage stressful situations effectively and may contribute to emotional distress, poor academic functioning, interpersonal difficulties, and reduced psychological wellbeing. Cognitive behavioural education provides an opportunity to equip students with practical knowledge and skills for identifying unhelpful thoughts, understanding the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, developing healthier thinking patterns, managing emotional responses, solving problems, and applying constructive coping strategies. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of cognitive behavioural education on coping skills among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Cognitive Behavioural Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and Stress and Coping Theory. Cognitive Behavioural Theory explains how patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviours interact and how modifying unhelpful cognitive patterns may promote healthier emotional and behavioural responses. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of learning, self-efficacy, behavioural skills, observational learning, and environmental influences in the development and application of coping skills. Stress and Coping Theory explains how individuals evaluate stressful situations and employ coping responses to manage psychological and environmental demands. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how cognitive behavioural education may influence coping skills among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Cognitive behavioural education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, training frequency and duration, understanding of the relationship between thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, identification of negative thought patterns, cognitive restructuring, positive thinking, emotional awareness, emotional regulation, problem-solving, behavioural activation, relaxation techniques, stress management, goal setting, communication skills, and practical application of cognitive behavioural strategies. Coping skills will be assessed using indicators such as problem-solving, positive reframing, emotional regulation, stress management, cognitive restructuring, seeking social support, adaptive communication, time management, relaxation, constructive emotional expression, behavioural coping, decision-making, and ability to respond appropriately to challenging academic, social, and personal situations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated cognitive behavioural education and coping-skills instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to cognitive behavioural education, and coping skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of cognitive behavioural education on coping skills. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cognitive behavioural education has a significant positive impact on coping skills among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured cognitive behavioural education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify unhelpful thoughts, reframe negative thinking, regulate emotional responses, solve problems, manage stress, seek appropriate support, and apply constructive coping strategies compared with their baseline skills or students without similar educational exposure. Practical exercises, guided cognitive restructuring, role-playing, case scenarios, reflective activities, and problem-solving exercises may strengthen students' ability to apply cognitive behavioural coping strategies in real-life situations. Improved coping skills may help students respond more effectively to academic, interpersonal, financial, and other life challenges. However, academic pressures, financial difficulties, limited access to counselling services, stigma surrounding psychological support, low participation in educational programmes, and inadequate follow-up may limit the sustained application of acquired coping skills. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, culturally appropriate, and sustained cognitive behavioural education to contribute significantly to improved coping skills among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cognitive behavioural education, coping skills, university student wellbeing, stress management, psychological resilience, mental health promotion, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Universities Commission, university administrators, student affairs departments, counselling centres, psychologists, counsellors, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening students' psychological coping capacities. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating cognitive behavioural education into university orientation and student development programmes, strengthening counselling and psychosocial support services, promoting adaptive coping strategies, expanding practical life-skills education, and establishing sustainable mental health promotion programmes across universities in Nigeria.
