Impact of Family Planning Mobile Applications on Modern Contraceptive Knowledge among Women of Reproductive Age in Nigeria

Abstract

Family planning is an important component of reproductive healthcare and contributes to improved maternal health, birth spacing, informed reproductive choices, and the prevention of unintended pregnancies. Despite the availability of modern contraceptive methods in Nigeria, some women of reproductive age continue to experience inadequate knowledge about contraceptive options, effectiveness, side effects, eligibility, and appropriate use. Barriers such as limited access to reliable reproductive health information, misconceptions, cultural beliefs, fear of side effects, inadequate counselling, and geographical barriers may contribute to gaps in contraceptive knowledge. Family planning mobile applications provide an increasingly accessible digital platform for delivering information about modern contraceptive methods, fertility awareness, method effectiveness, possible side effects, appointment reminders, and available family planning services. However, limited digital literacy, smartphone accessibility, internet connectivity, misinformation, privacy concerns, and differences in the quality of mobile health applications may affect their effectiveness. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of family planning mobile applications on modern contraceptive knowledge among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Technology Acceptance Model, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how women's perceptions of unintended pregnancy risk, perceived benefits of modern contraception, perceived barriers, perceived susceptibility, perceived severity, and cues to action may influence contraceptive knowledge and reproductive health decisions. The Technology Acceptance Model explains how perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and acceptance of family planning mobile applications may influence women's engagement with digital reproductive health information. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, behavioural skills, social influences, and interaction with digital health resources in shaping reproductive health practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how family planning mobile applications may influence modern contraceptive knowledge among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise women aged 15–49 years residing in selected communities in Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, healthcare facilities, and eligible women. Family planning mobile application use will be assessed using indicators such as availability and accessibility of the application, frequency and duration of use, application features, exposure to contraceptive information, interactive counselling or educational functions, reminders, access to healthcare information, ease of use, perceived usefulness, and user engagement. Modern contraceptive knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as awareness of modern contraceptive methods, knowledge of method effectiveness, duration of protection, correct use, possible side effects, contraindications or eligibility considerations, advantages and limitations of different methods, availability of contraceptive services, and knowledge of where to obtain appropriate family planning counselling and services. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated family planning knowledge assessment tools where appropriate, application usage records where available and consented to, and relevant family planning programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, mobile application exposure, contraceptive knowledge, and patterns of application use. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of family planning mobile applications on modern contraceptive knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, contraceptive knowledge scores before and after exposure to a structured family planning mobile application may be compared, while relevant demographic, socioeconomic, educational, and reproductive health factors are appropriately controlled. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that family planning mobile applications have a significant positive impact on modern contraceptive knowledge among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. Women who regularly use reliable family planning mobile applications are expected to demonstrate better knowledge of modern contraceptive methods, their effectiveness, correct use, potential side effects, and availability than women with limited or no exposure to such applications. Mobile applications may improve access to reproductive health information, allow women to obtain information privately and conveniently, correct misconceptions, and encourage women to seek professional family planning counselling when necessary. Interactive features, reminders, educational materials, and links to nearby healthcare services may further improve users' engagement with family planning information. However, limited smartphone ownership, poor internet connectivity, low digital literacy, language barriers, privacy concerns, misinformation, and limited opportunities for professional counselling may affect the effectiveness of mobile applications. The study therefore expects accessible, user-friendly, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, and professionally developed family planning mobile applications to contribute significantly to improved modern contraceptive knowledge among women of reproductive age in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on family planning mobile applications, modern contraceptive knowledge, digital reproductive health, mobile health, family planning education, reproductive health information, women's health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health, family planning programmes, healthcare providers, digital health organizations, reproductive health organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving access to reliable contraceptive information. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for developing and expanding evidence-based family planning mobile applications, improving the accuracy and accessibility of contraceptive information, incorporating professional counselling and referral functions, addressing digital literacy and language barriers, strengthening privacy and data protection measures, and integrating mobile family planning platforms with existing reproductive healthcare services across Nigeria.
