Impact of Mumps Awareness Education on Mumps Symptom Recognition among Secondary School Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Mumps is a contagious viral infection that can spread rapidly among children and adolescents, particularly in settings where individuals live, learn, and interact closely. Secondary school students in Nigeria may be exposed to mumps through contact with infected respiratory droplets and saliva, especially in crowded classrooms, hostels, and other shared environments. Although mumps may be mild in many cases, complications can occur and may include inflammation of the testicles or ovaries, meningitis, encephalitis, hearing problems, and other health complications. Limited knowledge of mumps symptoms, modes of transmission, complications, and appropriate healthcare-seeking may contribute to delayed recognition and continued exposure to infection. Mumps awareness education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of the disease and strengthen their ability to recognize symptoms and seek appropriate healthcare when necessary. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of mumps awareness education on mumps symptom recognition among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Health Literacy Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to mumps, perceived severity of complications, perceived benefits of early recognition and appropriate care, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence symptom recognition and healthcare-seeking. Health Literacy Theory emphasizes students' ability to obtain, understand, evaluate, and apply accurate information about mumps symptoms, transmission, complications, prevention, and healthcare services. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural modelling, self-efficacy, reinforcement, peer influence, and the school environment in shaping students' ability to recognize and respond appropriately to infectious diseases. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how mumps awareness education may influence mumps symptom recognition among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise secondary school students aged approximately 12–19 years enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria, with the specific age range determined according to the approved study protocol and ethical requirements. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, schools, classes, and eligible students. Mumps awareness education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information about mumps transmission, signs and symptoms, characteristic swelling of the salivary glands, fever, headache, muscle aches, complications, prevention, vaccination where applicable, infection-control measures, myths and misconceptions, and appropriate healthcare-seeking. Mumps symptom recognition will be assessed using indicators such as students' ability to identify characteristic mumps symptoms, recognize swelling around the jaw or cheeks, distinguish mumps from other common illnesses, identify associated symptoms, recognize potential complications, identify situations requiring medical assessment, and select appropriate sources of professional health information. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized mumps knowledge and symptom-recognition assessment tools, age-appropriate scenario-based or image-based questions where ethically appropriate, and pre-test and post-test assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and educational characteristics, previous exposure to mumps information, sources of health information, awareness levels, and symptom-recognition scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, paired and independent t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of mumps awareness education on mumps symptom recognition. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, symptom-recognition scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that mumps awareness education has a significant positive impact on mumps symptom recognition among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured, age-appropriate, evidence-based, and practical mumps awareness education are expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize characteristic mumps symptoms than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' understanding of salivary-gland swelling, fever, headache, muscle aches, and other common symptoms, as well as awareness of possible complications requiring medical attention. It may also help students distinguish mumps from other illnesses and encourage appropriate healthcare-seeking rather than relying solely on self-treatment or informal advice. Practical and visual educational activities may strengthen students' ability to recognize symptoms and understand measures that reduce transmission, including appropriate respiratory and hygiene practices. However, misinformation, stigma, limited access to healthcare services, misconceptions about infectious diseases, crowded school environments, and inadequate awareness of vaccination and prevention measures may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, age-appropriate, culturally appropriate, and sustained mumps awareness education to contribute significantly to improved mumps symptom recognition among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on mumps awareness, mumps symptom recognition, childhood and adolescent infectious diseases, school health, health education, health literacy, infection prevention, healthcare-seeking behaviour, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health and education, secondary schools, school health personnel, healthcare professionals, community health workers, parents, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving awareness of communicable diseases among adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating mumps education into school health programmes, improving students' recognition of characteristic symptoms and complications, strengthening infection-prevention education, promoting appropriate healthcare-seeking, addressing misinformation, improving communication about vaccination where applicable, and developing sustainable school-based interventions that support early recognition and appropriate management of mumps among secondary school students across Nigeria.
