Impact of School Shower and Changing Facilities on Personal Hygiene Practices among Secondary School Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Personal hygiene is an important component of adolescent health and wellbeing, particularly among secondary school students who may spend extended periods in school and participate in physical education, sports, and other activities that may result in sweating and exposure to dirt. Inadequate access to functional shower and changing facilities may make it difficult for students to maintain personal cleanliness after physical activities, change into clean clothing, and manage sweat or body odour appropriately. Poor hygiene conditions may contribute to discomfort, skin problems, embarrassment, reduced participation in school activities, and social difficulties. School shower and changing facilities may provide students with appropriate spaces and resources for maintaining personal hygiene during school hours. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of school shower and changing facilities on personal hygiene practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Social Ecological Model, Health Belief Model, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, interpersonal, school, environmental, infrastructural, and socioeconomic factors on students' personal hygiene practices. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of susceptibility to hygiene-related health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of maintaining personal hygiene, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, and cues to action may influence hygiene practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-efficacy, reinforcement, peer influence, social support, and environmental factors in shaping personal hygiene behaviour. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how school shower and changing facilities may influence personal hygiene practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise students enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, schools, classes, and eligible students. School shower and changing facilities will be assessed using indicators such as availability of functional showers, reliability of water supply, availability of soap and cleansing materials, cleanliness of shower areas, privacy, adequate lighting, ventilation, drainage, safety, accessibility during school hours, availability of changing rooms, adequate changing space, secure storage areas for clothing and personal belongings, gender-appropriate facilities, maintenance, and accessibility for students with disabilities. Personal hygiene practices will be assessed using indicators such as regular bathing, handwashing, changing into clean clothing after physical activities, washing of hands after using toilets, appropriate management of sweat and body odour, maintenance of hair and nails, use of clean personal items, proper disposal of sanitary materials where applicable, and appropriate hygiene practices following sports or physical education activities. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized personal-hygiene assessment tools, school facility observation checklists, school health records where available, and pre-intervention and post-intervention assessments where a quasi-experimental intervention is adopted. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, school hygiene conditions, availability and utilization of shower and changing facilities, and personal hygiene practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of school shower and changing facilities on personal hygiene practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, personal hygiene practice scores before and after the introduction or improvement of shower and changing facilities may be compared with those of a comparison school to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that school shower and changing facilities have a significant positive impact on personal hygiene practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students who have access to clean, functional, private, safe, and adequately maintained shower and changing facilities are expected to demonstrate better personal hygiene practices than students without comparable access. Availability of these facilities may enable students to bathe or clean themselves after physical activities, change into clean clothing, manage sweat and body odour, and maintain greater personal comfort during school hours. Adequate privacy and safe changing spaces may also increase students' willingness to use school hygiene facilities. However, unreliable water supply, inadequate maintenance, overcrowding, insufficient cleaning materials, poor drainage, limited facility availability, privacy concerns, school operating policies, and inadequate funding may reduce the effectiveness of facilities alone. The study therefore expects accessible, clean, safe, private, gender-appropriate, and well-maintained shower and changing facilities, supported by appropriate hygiene education, to contribute significantly to improved personal hygiene practices among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on school hygiene, personal hygiene practices, school WASH, adolescent health, environmental health, school health services, sanitation facilities, health education, health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of health and education, local government authorities, schools, school health personnel, environmental health officers, parent-teacher organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving hygiene conditions in schools. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for providing and maintaining functional school shower and changing facilities, improving water supply and drainage, ensuring adequate privacy and safety, strengthening school hygiene education, improving facility accessibility, and developing sustainable school-based WASH interventions that promote healthy personal hygiene practices among secondary school students across Nigeria.
