Impact of Stress Management Education on Stress Management Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Stress is an important mental health and public health concern among university students in Nigeria and may arise from academic demands, examinations, financial difficulties, relationship challenges, accommodation problems, family responsibilities, uncertainty about employment, and adjustment to university life. Persistent or poorly managed stress may negatively affect students' concentration, academic performance, sleep, emotional well-being, social relationships, and overall quality of life. Stress management education provides an opportunity to equip university students with practical knowledge and skills for identifying stressors, recognizing stress symptoms, developing healthy coping strategies, managing time effectively, engaging in relaxation and physical activities, improving sleep habits, seeking appropriate social support, and accessing professional assistance when necessary. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of stress management education on stress management practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, Social Cognitive Theory, and Health Belief Model. The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping explains how students' appraisal of stressful situations and their available coping resources influence their responses to stress. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, behavioural skills, observational learning, social support, and environmental factors in developing and maintaining healthy stress management practices. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of the effects of unmanaged stress, perceived benefits of stress management, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of appropriate coping practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how stress management education may influence stress management practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Stress management education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured stress management education, number and duration of educational sessions, identification of stressors, recognition of stress symptoms, time-management education, relaxation techniques, problem-solving skills, physical activity education, sleep-management education, healthy coping strategies, social-support utilization, avoidance of harmful coping behaviours, mindfulness or relaxation practices, academic workload management, and information about available counselling and mental health services. Stress management practices will be assessed using indicators such as effective time management, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, relaxation practices, problem-solving, positive coping strategies, social support, healthy eating patterns, academic workload management, use of counselling or professional support when necessary, and avoidance of harmful coping mechanisms such as substance misuse. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated stress management knowledge and practice instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to stress management education, and stress management practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of stress management education on stress management practices. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that stress management education has a significant positive impact on stress management practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured stress management education are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of healthy stress management practices than students without similar educational exposure or compared with their baseline practices. Education may improve students' ability to identify personal stressors, recognize early signs of excessive stress, manage academic demands, organize their time, practice relaxation techniques, maintain healthy sleep patterns, engage in physical activity, seek social support, and utilize appropriate counselling services. Practical and skills-based education may be particularly effective in translating knowledge into everyday stress management behaviours. University-based interventions delivered through counselling centres, orientation programmes, student health services, lectures, seminars, peer education, and digital platforms may provide accessible opportunities for strengthening students' coping practices. Conversely, academic workload, financial pressures, limited access to counselling services, inadequate time, cultural perceptions of help-seeking, social pressures, and established unhealthy coping habits may limit the adoption and sustainability of recommended stress management practices. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, culturally appropriate, and sustained stress management education to contribute significantly to improved stress management practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on stress management education, stress management practices, university student mental health, coping strategies, health education, mental health promotion, student well-being, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Universities Commission, university administrators, student affairs departments, university counselling centres, health services, psychologists, public health practitioners, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving student well-being. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating stress management education into university orientation and student health programmes, strengthening counselling and psychosocial support services, promoting healthy coping strategies, improving access to physical and recreational activities, strengthening peer-support programmes, and establishing sustainable stress management and mental health promotion initiatives across universities in Nigeria.
