Relationship Between Digastric Fossa Position and Mandibular Dimensions Among Young Adults

Abstract

The study examines the relationship between digastric fossa position and mandibular dimensions among young adults. The digastric fossa is a shallow depression located on the inferior surface of the body of the mandible near the symphysis and provides attachment for the anterior belly of the digastric muscle. Its anatomical position in relation to surrounding mandibular structures is important in understanding mandibular morphology and may have relevance to procedures involving the lower border and anterior region of the mandible. The study will aim to determine the position of the digastric fossa in relation to standardized mandibular anatomical landmarks and assess selected mandibular dimensions among young adults. It will also examine the relationship between digastric fossa position and the measured mandibular dimensions. The study will further document variations in the location of the digastric fossa and provide information on its spatial relationship with surrounding mandibular structures. A cross-sectional descriptive research design will be adopted for the study. Young adults who meet the established inclusion criteria will be selected using an appropriate sampling technique. The position of the digastric fossa and selected mandibular dimensions will be assessed using suitable standardized anatomical landmarks and imaging or osteological measurement procedures. Data obtained will be analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, percentage, mean, and standard deviation, while appropriate correlation and inferential statistical techniques will be applied to determine the relationship between digastric fossa position and mandibular dimensions. The study is expected to reveal measurable variation in the position of the digastric fossa and mandibular dimensions among the participants. A statistically significant association may be observed between digastric fossa position and selected mandibular measurements. The findings are expected to demonstrate patterns of anatomical variation that may contribute to a better understanding of the spatial relationship between the digastric fossa and the morphology of the mandible. The findings will be useful to anatomists, dentists, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, radiologists, and other healthcare professionals involved in mandibular assessment and procedures. Information on the relationship between digastric fossa position and mandibular dimensions may assist in anatomical identification, interpretation of mandibular morphology, surgical planning, and understanding the attachment region of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle.
