THE ROLE OF RAPE SUPPORTIVE ATTITUDES, ALCOHOL AND SEXUAL AROUSAL IN SEXUAL MISCONCEPTION
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
Sexual aggression is a substantial public health issue, particularly on university campuses, with up to one-third of university women reporting having experienced sexual aggression (Bergeron et al., 2016; Koss, Gidycz, & Wisniewski, 1987). Sexual aggression is here defined as the use of any tactic or behavior to engage another person in a sexual activity without his or her freely given consent (Farris, Treat, Viken, & McFall, 2008). This definition generally includes the use of verbal or psychological pressure (including threats, lies, false promises, deception, or blackmail), the intoxication of the victim, or the use of physical force. Considering its high prevalence, obtaining a better understanding of the mechanisms and processes involved in sexual aggression is particularly important. The present study investigated the effects of rape-supportive attitudes, alcohol, and sexual arousal on sexual perception. More specifically, we examined the ability of two situational factors—alcohol intoxication and sexual arousal—to trigger the effects of rape-supportive attitudes and therefore to explain differences in individuals’ sexual perception.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
The present study investigated the effects of rape-supportive attitudes, alcohol, and sexual arousal on sexual perception. The study wishes to experimentally manipulate alcohol consumption and sexual arousal in order to understand their respective as well as their possible interactive effects on sexual perception. Second, the present study innovatively uses a decision-latency measure (Marx & Gross, 1995) to specifically examine sexual perception by men exposed to variations in a woman’s sexual intent (i.e., from an early expression of sexual interest and consent to explicit non consent). While past research using a decision latency measure focused on when men should refrain from making further sexual advances.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
The main objective of this study is to determine the effect of compensation management on employee performance. Specific objectives include;
i. To evaluate the impact of alcohol on abuse of sexual nature.
ii.To determine sexual arousal influence on rape cases.
iii. To find out rape supportive altitude on sexually abused persons.
1.4 Research Questions
i. What is the impact of alcohol on sexual abuse in the society?
ii. What is the role of sexual arousal in influencing sexual abuse?
iii. What are the supportive altitudes to best respond to abuse of sexual nature?
1.5 Research Hypotheses
Hypothesis I
H0: There is no significant impact of alcohol on sexual abuse.
Hi: There is a significant impact of alcohol on sexual abuse.
Hypothesis II
H0: There is no significant impact of sexual arousal on rape cases.
Hi: There is a significant impact of sexual arousal on rape cases.
Hypothesis III
H0: There is no significant impact of supportive altitude on sexually abused persons.
Hi: There is a significant impact of supportive altitude on sexually abused persons.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will be of immense benefit to other researchers who intend to know more on this study and can also be used by non-researchers to build more on their research work. This study contributes to knowledge and could serve as a guide for other study.
1.7 Scope of the Study
The present study investigated the effects of rape-supportive attitudes, alcohol, and sexual arousal on sexual perception in the society.
1.8 Limitations of the study
The demanding schedule of respondents made it very difficult getting the respondents to participate in the survey. As a result, retrieving copies of questionnaires in timely fashion was very challenging. Also, the researcher is a student and therefore has limited time as well as resources in covering extensive literature available in conducting this research. Information provided by the researcher may not hold true for all research under this study but is restricted to the selected respondents used as a study in this research especially in the locality where this study is being conducted. Finally, the researcher is restricted only to the evidence provided by the participants in the research and therefore cannot determine the reliability and accuracy of the information provided. Other limitations include;
Financial constraint: Insufficient fund tends to impede the efficiency of the researcher in sourcing for the relevant materials, literature or information and in the process of data collection (internet, questionnaire and interview).
Time constraint: The researcher will simultaneously engage in this study with other academic work. This consequently will cut down on the time devoted for the research work.
