Effect of Conflict Resolution Education on Conflict Resolution Skills among Secondary School Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Conflict is a common social and interpersonal challenge among secondary school students and may arise from disagreements, peer relationships, competition, bullying, misunderstandings, differences in opinions, and other social interactions within the school environment. When conflicts are poorly managed, they may escalate into verbal aggression, physical violence, bullying, social exclusion, disciplinary problems, and disruption of teaching and learning. Conflict resolution education provides an opportunity to equip students with practical skills for understanding the causes of conflict, communicating effectively, managing emotions, negotiating disagreements, demonstrating empathy, resolving disputes peacefully, and seeking appropriate assistance when conflicts cannot be resolved independently. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of conflict resolution education on conflict resolution skills among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Conflict Transformation Theory. Social Learning Theory explains how students may acquire constructive or aggressive conflict behaviours through observation, imitation, reinforcement, and interaction with peers and adults. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, behavioural skills, observational learning, and environmental influences in developing effective conflict resolution abilities. Conflict Transformation Theory views conflict as an opportunity to address underlying relationships, behaviours, interests, and social structures and to promote constructive and peaceful relationships. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how conflict resolution education may influence conflict resolution skills among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise students enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible students. Conflict resolution education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, training frequency and duration, understanding of conflict causes, communication skills, active listening, empathy, emotional regulation, negotiation, mediation, problem-solving, cooperation, perspective-taking, assertiveness, anger management, peer mediation, non-violent communication, and peaceful dispute-management strategies. Conflict resolution skills will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify sources of conflict, communicate concerns respectfully, listen actively, regulate emotions, demonstrate empathy, negotiate disagreements, compromise appropriately, solve interpersonal problems, manage anger, avoid aggressive responses, mediate peer disputes, seek assistance when necessary, and reach mutually acceptable solutions. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, conflict-resolution scenarios, role-play assessments, and appropriately validated conflict resolution skills instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, previous conflict experiences, exposure to conflict resolution education, and conflict resolution skill levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of conflict resolution education on conflict resolution skills. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that conflict resolution education has a significant positive effect on conflict resolution skills among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured conflict resolution education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to communicate respectfully, listen actively, regulate emotions, understand different perspectives, negotiate disagreements, manage anger, solve interpersonal problems, and resolve conflicts peacefully compared with their baseline skills or students without similar educational exposure. Practical approaches involving role-playing, peer mediation, case scenarios, group discussions, cooperative activities, and problem-solving exercises may strengthen students' ability to apply conflict resolution skills in real-life school situations. Improved conflict resolution skills may contribute to healthier peer relationships, reduced aggressive responses, improved classroom interactions, and a safer school environment. However, peer pressure, aggressive social norms, bullying, inadequate teacher supervision, family conflict, limited counselling resources, and inconsistent school disciplinary practices may limit the effectiveness and sustainability of conflict resolution education. The study therefore expects structured, practical, age-appropriate, culturally appropriate, and sustained conflict resolution education to contribute significantly to improved conflict resolution skills among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on conflict resolution education, conflict resolution skills, secondary school students, school violence prevention, peer relationships, social-emotional learning, adolescent wellbeing, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of education and health, school administrators, teachers, school counsellors, parents, psychologists, social workers, youth organizations, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting peaceful school environments. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating conflict resolution education into school curricula and student development programmes, strengthening peer mediation initiatives, improving teacher and counsellor capacity, promoting non-violent communication, strengthening school counselling services, and establishing sustainable conflict prevention and resolution programmes across secondary schools in Nigeria.
