Effect of Cyberbullying Awareness Education on Cyberbullying Prevention Knowledge among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Cyberbullying is an emerging social, educational, and public health concern among university students in Nigeria and may negatively affect students' psychological well-being, academic performance, social relationships, self-esteem, and sense of safety. The widespread use of social media, instant messaging applications, online communities, and other digital platforms has increased opportunities for cyberbullying through harassment, threats, humiliation, impersonation, exclusion, dissemination of harmful content, and other forms of online abuse. Despite these risks, some university students may have limited knowledge of cyberbullying, its consequences, appropriate preventive measures, reporting mechanisms, and strategies for protecting themselves and others in digital environments. Cyberbullying awareness education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of cyberbullying, including its forms, warning signs, risk factors, consequences, prevention strategies, responsible digital behaviour, reporting procedures, and available support services. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of cyberbullying awareness education on cyberbullying prevention knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Learning Theory, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Social Ecological Model. Social Learning Theory explains how students may acquire online behaviours through observation, imitation, reinforcement, and interaction with peers and other users in digital environments. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, behavioural skills, peer influence, and environmental factors in shaping students' online safety and cyberbullying prevention behaviours. The Social Ecological Model recognizes that cyberbullying is influenced by interacting factors at the individual, interpersonal, institutional, community, technological, and broader societal levels. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how cyberbullying awareness education may influence cyberbullying prevention knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Cyberbullying awareness education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, programme frequency and duration, understanding of cyberbullying, recognition of different forms of online abuse, identification of warning signs, knowledge of cyberbullying risk factors and consequences, responsible social media use, privacy and account-security practices, digital communication etiquette, evidence preservation, blocking and reporting mechanisms, knowledge of institutional and platform-based reporting systems, support-seeking, and awareness of relevant legal and institutional protections. Cyberbullying prevention knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as students' ability to identify cyberbullying behaviours, recognize potential risks, understand preventive digital practices, protect personal information, respond appropriately to online harassment, preserve relevant evidence, block or report harmful accounts, seek appropriate support, protect affected peers, and identify circumstances requiring institutional or professional intervention. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriately validated cyberbullying prevention knowledge instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, digital-use patterns, exposure to cyberbullying awareness education, and prevention knowledge levels. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of cyberbullying awareness education on cyberbullying prevention knowledge. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cyberbullying awareness education has a significant positive effect on cyberbullying prevention knowledge among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured cyberbullying awareness education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of cyberbullying behaviours, risk factors, consequences, preventive digital practices, reporting procedures, evidence preservation, and appropriate support mechanisms compared with their baseline knowledge or students without similar educational exposure. Education may improve students' ability to recognize harmful online behaviours, protect their personal information, use privacy and security settings appropriately, respond safely to cyberbullying incidents, report abusive content, and support peers experiencing online harassment. Interactive approaches involving case scenarios, digital safety demonstrations, peer discussions, and practical reporting exercises may strengthen students' ability to apply cyberbullying prevention knowledge in real-world online environments. Conversely, rapid changes in digital platforms, limited institutional policies, low awareness of reporting mechanisms, fear of retaliation, normalization of harmful online behaviour, inadequate digital safety resources, and reluctance to report incidents may limit the effectiveness of cyberbullying awareness education. The study therefore expects structured, practical, accessible, and sustained cyberbullying awareness education to contribute significantly to improved cyberbullying prevention knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cyberbullying awareness education, cyberbullying prevention knowledge, digital safety, university student well-being, online behaviour, cyber violence prevention, health education, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, university administrators, student affairs departments, information and communication technology units, counselling centres, student organizations, cybersecurity professionals, psychologists, public health practitioners, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving digital safety among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating cyberbullying awareness education into university orientation and student development programmes, strengthening institutional cyberbullying policies, improving confidential reporting mechanisms, promoting responsible digital citizenship, strengthening student counselling and psychosocial support, and improving access to digital safety education across universities in Nigeria.
