Effect of Cyberbullying Health Education on Cyberbullying Prevention Knowledge among Secondary School Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Cyberbullying has emerged as an important public health, educational, and psychosocial concern among secondary school students in Nigeria due to the increasing use of smartphones, social media, online messaging platforms, gaming communities, and other digital communication channels. Cyberbullying may involve repeated harassment, threats, humiliation, intimidation, exclusion, impersonation, or the sharing of harmful content through electronic devices and online platforms. Exposure to cyberbullying may negatively affect students' emotional wellbeing, social relationships, school participation, concentration, academic performance, and sense of safety. Students may also experience difficulty recognizing cyberbullying, reporting incidents, protecting personal information, or supporting peers who are affected. Cyberbullying health education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of cyberbullying, its potential health and psychosocial consequences, prevention strategies, reporting mechanisms, responsible digital behaviour, and appropriate sources of support. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of cyberbullying health education on cyberbullying prevention knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of their susceptibility to cyberbullying, perceived severity of its consequences, perceived benefits of preventive actions, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their prevention knowledge and responses. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, peer influence, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and environmental factors in shaping students' online behaviours and responses to cyberbullying. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the interaction between individual, peer, family, school, community, and broader digital-environmental factors in influencing cyberbullying experiences and prevention. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how cyberbullying health education may influence cyberbullying prevention knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise students aged 12–18 years enrolled in selected public and private secondary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible students. Cyberbullying health education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on definitions and forms of cyberbullying, identification of harmful online behaviours, potential psychosocial and health consequences, online privacy and security, responsible digital communication, reporting procedures, blocking and evidence-preservation strategies, peer-support approaches, school reporting mechanisms, and sources of professional assistance. Cyberbullying prevention knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as students' ability to identify cyberbullying, recognize warning signs, distinguish cyberbullying from ordinary online disagreements, understand appropriate privacy and security practices, identify safe reporting channels, understand how to block or restrict harmful contacts, preserve relevant evidence, avoid retaliatory responses, support affected peers, and seek assistance from trusted adults, school authorities, counsellors, or appropriate support services. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized cyberbullying knowledge assessment tools, scenario-based prevention questions, school counselling records where appropriate, and relevant school health and digital-safety programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' characteristics, digital-device use, exposure to cyberbullying education, sources of online information, and prevention knowledge. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of cyberbullying health education on cyberbullying prevention knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, prevention-knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that cyberbullying health education has a significant positive effect on cyberbullying prevention knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and age-appropriate cyberbullying education are expected to demonstrate greater knowledge of cyberbullying prevention and appropriate responses than students without comparable exposure. Education may improve students' ability to recognize cyberbullying behaviours, understand potential effects on emotional and social wellbeing, protect personal information, use privacy and security settings, and identify appropriate reporting mechanisms. Scenario-based education may help students distinguish between ordinary online disagreements and harmful cyberbullying behaviour and understand the importance of avoiding retaliation. Students may also become more knowledgeable about supporting affected peers and seeking help from trusted adults, teachers, school counsellors, parents, or other appropriate sources. However, peer influence, fear of reporting, stigma, limited parental awareness, inadequate school reporting systems, rapid changes in digital platforms, anonymous online accounts, and concerns about loss of device or internet access may limit the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, age-appropriate, and sustained cyberbullying health education, supported by school policies, parental involvement, counselling services, and digital-safety measures, to contribute significantly to improved cyberbullying prevention knowledge among secondary school students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on cyberbullying, adolescent health, digital health, online safety, school health, psychosocial wellbeing, health education, digital literacy, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, state ministries of health and education, secondary schools, teachers, school counsellors, parents, child-protection organizations, public health practitioners, youth organizations, digital-safety stakeholders, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for preventing cyberbullying among adolescents. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating cyberbullying prevention education into school health programmes, strengthening digital-safety and online-risk education, improving school reporting and counselling systems, increasing parental and teacher awareness, promoting responsible digital citizenship, and developing supportive school environments that protect secondary school students from the health and psychosocial consequences of cyberbullying across Nigeria.
