Effect of Disability Awareness Education on Disability-Inclusive Practices among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Disability inclusion is an important component of creating equitable, respectful, and supportive educational and social environments. University students interact with persons with disabilities in academic, social, residential, and community settings, and their attitudes and behaviours may influence the extent to which students with disabilities experience inclusion and participation. However, misconceptions, stigma, negative stereotypes, inappropriate language, limited understanding of different disabilities, and inadequate knowledge of reasonable accommodations may contribute to exclusionary practices within university communities. Disability awareness education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of disability, challenge misconceptions, promote respectful attitudes, and encourage inclusive practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of disability awareness education on disability-inclusive practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Social Model of Disability, and Contact Theory. Social Cognitive Theory explains how observational learning, social reinforcement, self-efficacy, and environmental influences may shape students' attitudes and behaviours toward persons with disabilities. The Social Model of Disability emphasizes that social, environmental, and institutional barriers can restrict the participation of persons with disabilities and highlights the importance of removing such barriers. Contact Theory suggests that meaningful and appropriately structured interaction with persons with disabilities may reduce prejudice, challenge stereotypes, and promote more positive attitudes. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how disability awareness education may influence disability-inclusive practices among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, and eligible students. Disability awareness education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured disability education, frequency and duration of educational sessions, knowledge of different types of disabilities, disability rights, appropriate terminology, reasonable accommodation, accessibility, communication with persons with disabilities, assistive technologies, stigma reduction, inclusion principles, and disability-related legislation and policies. Disability-inclusive practices will be assessed using indicators such as respectful communication, appropriate interaction with students with disabilities, avoidance of discriminatory language and behaviours, willingness to provide reasonable assistance, support for accessible learning environments, respect for disability rights, inclusion in group activities, appropriate communication practices, advocacy for accessibility, and willingness to challenge discriminatory behaviours. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated disability knowledge and attitude instruments, disability-inclusive practice scales, educational programme attendance records, and relevant university disability-support documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to disability awareness education, and levels of disability-inclusive practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of disability awareness education on disability-inclusive practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, disability-inclusive practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that disability awareness education has a significant positive effect on disability-inclusive practices among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured disability awareness education are expected to demonstrate improved understanding of disability, more respectful communication, greater willingness to support reasonable accommodations, and increased participation in activities that promote inclusion. Education may also reduce misconceptions and negative stereotypes while encouraging students to challenge discriminatory practices and support accessible academic and social environments. Interactive teaching, lived-experience presentations, simulations used appropriately, and opportunities for meaningful interaction with persons with disabilities may strengthen students' understanding and encourage more inclusive behaviours. However, inadequate disability education, limited institutional support, persistent social stereotypes, lack of accessible facilities, and insufficient opportunities for meaningful interaction may limit the effectiveness of awareness programmes. The study therefore expects accessible, practical, participatory, and regularly reinforced disability awareness education to contribute significantly to improved disability-inclusive practices among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on disability awareness education, disability-inclusive practices, disability inclusion, university students, stigma reduction, social participation, accessibility, inclusive education, health equity, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Universities Commission, universities, student affairs departments, disability support units, student organizations, disability advocacy groups, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting disability inclusion within higher education institutions. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating disability awareness education into university orientation and general studies programmes, strengthening disability support services, improving student understanding of accessibility and reasonable accommodation, promoting inclusive student activities, and creating university environments that support the dignity, participation, and rights of persons with disabilities across Nigeria.
