Effect of Financial Stress Education on Financial Stress Management among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Financial stress is an important concern among university students in Nigeria, particularly as students may face rising living costs, educational expenses, transportation and accommodation costs, limited financial resources, family financial difficulties, and uncertainty about future employment. Persistent financial pressure may affect students' concentration, academic engagement, sleep, emotional wellbeing, social relationships, and overall quality of life. Although financial difficulties cannot always be eliminated through education, students can be equipped with practical knowledge and skills to recognize financial stress, identify its causes, manage available resources, develop realistic financial plans, control unnecessary expenditure, seek appropriate financial assistance, and adopt healthier financial coping strategies. Financial stress education provides a structured approach to developing these knowledge and skills and may help students respond more effectively to financial challenges. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of financial stress education on financial stress management among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Financial Capability Framework. The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping explains how students' appraisal of financial demands and their perceived coping resources influence their experience and management of financial stress. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-efficacy, self-regulation, behavioural skills, observational learning, and environmental influences in developing effective financial coping behaviours. The Financial Capability Framework emphasizes the interaction between financial knowledge, financial skills, financial behaviour, and access to appropriate financial resources in enabling individuals to manage financial challenges effectively. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how financial stress education may influence financial stress management among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Financial stress education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured financial stress education sessions, understanding of financial stress, identification of financial stressors, budgeting education, expenditure planning, saving strategies, responsible borrowing, debt management, financial goal setting, coping strategies, financial problem-solving, awareness of financial assistance, and guidance on accessing appropriate financial support. Financial stress management will be assessed using indicators such as ability to identify financial stress triggers, budgeting and expenditure control, prioritization of essential needs, saving behaviour, responsible borrowing, debt-management practices, financial planning, seeking appropriate financial advice, use of available financial support, coping with unexpected expenses, emotional management during financial difficulties, and perceived ability to manage financial pressure. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated financial stress and financial management instruments, and relevant programme participation records. Financial stress management will be assessed before and after participation in the financial stress education intervention. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic, socioeconomic, and academic characteristics, financial stressors, and financial stress management practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired sample tests, independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of financial stress education on financial stress management. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that financial stress education has a significant positive effect on financial stress management among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured financial stress education are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify financial stressors, plan and manage their finances, prioritize essential expenditure, control unnecessary spending, manage debt, develop realistic financial goals, and seek appropriate financial support compared with their baseline practices or students without similar intervention exposure. Education on budgeting, saving, responsible borrowing, financial problem-solving, coping strategies, and available support services may improve students' financial self-efficacy and enable them to respond more effectively to financial challenges. However, high living costs, limited income, family financial difficulties, inadequate student financial support, unemployment concerns, tuition and accommodation expenses, and broader economic conditions may continue to contribute to financial stress despite improved management skills. The study therefore expects practical, contextually relevant, and sustained financial stress education to contribute significantly to improved financial stress management among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on financial stress education, financial stress management, university students, financial wellbeing, financial capability, money management, student wellbeing, financial education, stress management, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, Central Bank of Nigeria, universities, student affairs departments, counselling centres, financial institutions, financial educators, public health practitioners, youth organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving students' financial wellbeing. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating financial stress education into university orientation and student-support programmes, strengthening practical financial management training, improving access to appropriate financial assistance, promoting responsible borrowing and saving, strengthening counselling support for financially distressed students, and developing sustainable financial wellbeing initiatives across Nigerian universities.
