Effect of Healthy Lifestyle Education on Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Practices among Adults in Nigeria

Abstract

Cardiovascular disease remains an important public health concern and contributes substantially to illness, disability, and premature mortality among adults. Major modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease include unhealthy dietary practices, physical inactivity, tobacco use, harmful alcohol consumption, overweight and obesity, hypertension, and inadequate awareness of cardiovascular risk factors. In Nigeria, changing lifestyles, urbanization, sedentary behaviour, and increasing exposure to unhealthy foods may contribute to the growing burden of cardiovascular risk among adults. Healthy lifestyle education provides an opportunity to improve knowledge and encourage individuals to adopt preventive behaviours related to diet, physical activity, tobacco avoidance, alcohol moderation, weight management, blood pressure monitoring, and other cardiovascular health practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of healthy lifestyle education on cardiovascular disease prevention practices among adults in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Social Ecological Model. The Health Belief Model explains how adults' perceptions of cardiovascular disease susceptibility, perceived severity, perceived benefits of preventive behaviours, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence the adoption of cardiovascular disease prevention practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-efficacy, observational learning, behavioural reinforcement, social support, and environmental influences in the development and maintenance of healthy lifestyle behaviours. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the interaction between individual, interpersonal, community, environmental, and broader societal factors in shaping cardiovascular health behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how healthy lifestyle education may influence cardiovascular disease prevention practices among adults in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adults aged 18 years and above residing in selected urban, semi-urban, and rural communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, households, and eligible participants. Healthy lifestyle education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured health education, frequency and duration of educational sessions, information on cardiovascular disease risk factors, healthy diet, physical activity, tobacco avoidance, responsible alcohol use, weight management, stress management, adequate sleep, blood pressure monitoring, cholesterol awareness, and appropriate healthcare utilization. Cardiovascular disease prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as regular physical activity, healthy dietary practices, reduced intake of salt and unhealthy fats, increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, avoidance of tobacco products, responsible alcohol consumption, regular blood pressure checks, weight monitoring, cholesterol screening where appropriate, stress-management practices, adequate sleep, and timely utilization of preventive healthcare services. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated lifestyle and cardiovascular prevention instruments, physical activity and dietary assessment tools, health screening records where appropriately available, and relevant community health programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to healthy lifestyle education, and cardiovascular disease prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of healthy lifestyle education on cardiovascular disease prevention practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, prevention-practice scores and selected cardiovascular risk indicators before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that healthy lifestyle education has a significant positive effect on cardiovascular disease prevention practices among adults in Nigeria. Adults exposed to structured and practical lifestyle education are expected to demonstrate improved dietary practices, increased physical activity, reduced tobacco exposure, healthier weight-management practices, increased awareness of blood pressure and cholesterol monitoring, and improved utilization of preventive healthcare services. Practical education, community demonstrations, group discussions, peer support, and regular reinforcement may strengthen participants' self-efficacy and ability to maintain healthy behaviours. Education may also improve recognition of cardiovascular disease risk factors and encourage early adoption of preventive practices. However, food costs, limited access to healthy foods, unsafe environments for physical activity, demanding work schedules, socioeconomic challenges, cultural practices, tobacco and alcohol availability, and limited access to preventive healthcare services may reduce the effectiveness of lifestyle education. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally appropriate, practical, and sustained healthy lifestyle education to contribute significantly to improved cardiovascular disease prevention practices among adults in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on healthy lifestyle education, cardiovascular disease prevention, adult health, health promotion, non-communicable disease prevention, lifestyle modification, community health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health, primary healthcare facilities, community health workers, healthcare professionals, employers, non-governmental organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing cardiovascular disease risk. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening lifestyle education within primary healthcare and community health programmes, promoting affordable healthy diets, increasing opportunities for physical activity, improving cardiovascular risk screening, strengthening tobacco and alcohol prevention initiatives, and developing sustainable cardiovascular disease prevention programmes across Nigeria.
