Effect of Household Waste Collection Services on Proper Waste Disposal among Urban Households in Nigeria

Abstract

Improper household waste disposal remains an important environmental and public health concern in urban communities in Nigeria. Rapid urbanization, population growth, inadequate waste collection infrastructure, irregular collection services, limited disposal facilities, and poor household waste-management practices may contribute to indiscriminate dumping, open burning, disposal in drains, and other inappropriate methods of waste disposal. These practices may block drainage systems, contribute to flooding, create breeding sites for disease vectors, contaminate soil and water, generate air pollution, and negatively affect the quality of urban environments. Household waste collection services provide an organized mechanism for removing waste from households and transporting it to appropriate disposal or treatment facilities. Reliable and accessible collection services may therefore encourage households to adopt safer disposal practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of household waste collection services on proper waste disposal among urban households in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Social Ecological Model, Theory of Planned Behavior, and the Health Belief Model. The Social Ecological Model explains how household waste-disposal behaviour is influenced by individual, household, community, institutional, environmental, and policy factors. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how households' attitudes toward waste disposal, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions may influence their disposal practices. The Health Belief Model explains how perceptions of the health and environmental consequences of improper waste disposal, perceived benefits of proper disposal, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence household waste-management behaviour. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how household waste collection services may influence proper waste disposal among urban households in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise households residing in selected urban communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, urban local government areas, communities, neighbourhoods, households, and eligible household representatives. Household waste collection services will be measured using indicators such as availability of collection services, frequency of collection, reliability of collection schedules, collection coverage, accessibility of collection points, distance to collection points, affordability of collection services, availability of waste containers, type of collection service, regularity of service providers, communication about collection schedules, and perceived adequacy of waste collection services. Proper waste disposal will be assessed using indicators such as use of authorized waste collection services, disposal of waste in designated containers, separation of waste where applicable, avoidance of indiscriminate dumping, avoidance of open burning, avoidance of disposal in drainage channels and waterways, appropriate storage of household waste before collection, and adherence to local waste-disposal regulations. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, household waste-management assessment tools, observational checklists, waste collection records where available, and relevant environmental health records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize households' demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, waste-generation patterns, access to collection services, and disposal practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of household waste collection services on proper waste disposal. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that household waste collection services have a significant positive effect on proper waste disposal among urban households in Nigeria. Households with reliable, affordable, accessible, and regular waste collection services are expected to demonstrate greater use of approved disposal methods and lower levels of indiscriminate dumping, open burning, and disposal of waste in drainage channels or other unauthorized locations. Regular collection may reduce the amount of waste stored around households and make proper disposal more convenient. Accessible collection services may also strengthen household compliance with environmental health regulations and encourage participation in organized waste-management systems. However, inadequate collection coverage, irregular service schedules, high service costs, insufficient collection containers, poor enforcement of waste regulations, and limited availability of final disposal facilities may reduce the effectiveness of household waste collection services. The study therefore expects reliable, accessible, affordable, and properly managed household waste collection services to contribute significantly to improved waste-disposal practices among urban households in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on household waste collection services, proper waste disposal, urban waste management, environmental health, household sanitation, waste-management behaviour, urban public health, and environmental sustainability in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Environment, state environmental protection agencies, local government authorities, waste-management authorities, private waste-management companies, environmental health officers, urban planners, community organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving household waste management. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding waste collection coverage, improving collection frequency and reliability, establishing affordable household waste services, providing appropriate waste containers, strengthening monitoring and enforcement, improving final waste-disposal infrastructure, and promoting sustainable household waste-management practices across Nigerian cities.
