Effect of Menopause Self-Care Education on Menopause Self-Care Practices among Women Aged 40–55 Years in Nigeria
Abstract
Menopause is a natural stage of the reproductive life course that may be accompanied by physical, emotional, and psychosocial changes that affect women's daily activities and quality of life. Women aged 40–55 years may experience symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, sleep disturbances, mood changes, vaginal dryness, fatigue, and changes in bone and cardiovascular health. Despite the common occurrence of menopausal symptoms, many women may have limited knowledge about appropriate self-care practices and may rely on misconceptions, informal advice, or ineffective remedies. Menopause self-care education provides an opportunity to equip women with accurate information and practical skills for managing menopausal symptoms and maintaining healthy behaviours. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of menopause self-care education on menopause self-care practices among women aged 40–55 years in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Self-Efficacy Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how women's perceptions of menopause-related health risks, perceived severity of symptoms, perceived benefits of self-care, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of appropriate self-care practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, behavioural reinforcement, social support, environmental influences, and self-regulation in maintaining healthy behaviours. Self-Efficacy Theory emphasizes women's confidence in their ability to manage menopausal symptoms, adopt healthy lifestyles, monitor their health, and seek appropriate professional care when necessary. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how menopause self-care education may influence self-care practices among women aged 40–55 years in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise women aged 40–55 years residing in selected communities and attending primary healthcare centres, hospitals, women's health clinics, workplaces, community health programmes, and other relevant settings across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, healthcare facilities, and eligible women. Menopause self-care education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on menopause and its symptoms, healthy nutrition, physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, hydration, avoidance of harmful substances, bone health, cardiovascular health, vaginal and sexual health, symptom management, appropriate use of healthcare services, and recognition of symptoms requiring professional evaluation. Menopause self-care practices will be assessed using indicators such as dietary practices, regular physical activity, sleep-management practices, stress-management strategies, appropriate symptom management, preventive health screening, bone-health practices, cardiovascular risk monitoring, appropriate use of prescribed treatments, and healthcare-seeking for concerning symptoms. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and validated menopause self-care assessment instruments, with relevant healthcare records where appropriate. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to menopause self-care education, and patterns of self-care practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of menopause self-care education on menopause self-care practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, self-care practice scores before and after the educational intervention will be compared to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that menopause self-care education has a significant positive effect on menopause self-care practices among women aged 40–55 years in Nigeria. Women exposed to structured and practical menopause education are expected to demonstrate improved dietary practices, increased physical activity, better sleep and stress-management practices, greater attention to bone and cardiovascular health, and more appropriate utilization of healthcare services. Education may also correct misconceptions about menopause, improve women's confidence in managing symptoms, and encourage them to seek professional evaluation when symptoms are persistent, severe, unusual, or suggestive of another health condition. Practical demonstrations, individualized counselling, and culturally appropriate educational materials may further improve the adoption of recommended self-care behaviours. However, financial constraints, cultural beliefs, limited access to women's health services, inadequate health information, competing family responsibilities, and reliance on informal sources of health advice may limit the effectiveness of menopause self-care education. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally appropriate, practical, and continuous menopause self-care education to contribute significantly to improved self-care practices among women aged 40–55 years in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on menopause self-care education, menopause self-care practices, women's health, menopausal health, health education, preventive healthcare, healthy ageing, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health, primary healthcare centres, hospitals, women's health clinics, nurses, midwives, community health workers, women's health organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving menopausal health. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating menopause education into routine women's health services, developing culturally appropriate educational materials, strengthening healthcare-provider counselling, improving access to menopause-related healthcare, promoting healthy lifestyle practices, and encouraging appropriate preventive health screening among women aged 40–55 years across Nigeria.
