Effect of Occupational Health Screening on Early Detection of Occupational Diseases among Factory Workers in Nigeria

Abstract

Occupational diseases remain an important public health concern among factory workers in Nigeria because of continuous exposure to workplace hazards such as dust, chemicals, excessive noise, heat, vibration, fumes, heavy machinery, and other physical and environmental risks. Prolonged exposure to these hazards may contribute to respiratory diseases, hearing impairment, skin disorders, musculoskeletal conditions, occupational injuries, and other work-related illnesses. Early detection of occupational diseases is essential for timely treatment, prevention of disease progression, reduction of disability, and protection of workers' health and productivity. Occupational health screening provides a systematic approach to identifying work-related health conditions through periodic medical examinations, health assessments, laboratory investigations, hearing tests, respiratory assessments, and other appropriate screening procedures. Regular screening can help identify early abnormalities among workers before symptoms become severe and may support timely referral and intervention. However, limited access to occupational health services, inadequate screening equipment, shortages of trained occupational health personnel, poor employer compliance with workplace health standards, irregular medical examinations, and inadequate health records may reduce the effectiveness of occupational health screening among factory workers in Nigeria. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of occupational health screening on early detection of occupational diseases among factory workers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Occupational Health Theory, Screening Theory, and the Health Systems Framework. Occupational Health Theory emphasizes the identification, prevention, monitoring, and management of workplace hazards and their effects on workers' health. Screening Theory provides a framework for identifying diseases or abnormal health conditions at an early stage among individuals who may not yet exhibit obvious symptoms, thereby facilitating timely intervention and improved health outcomes. The Health Systems Framework emphasizes service delivery, health workforce, health information, medical products and technologies, financing, and governance as essential components of an effective healthcare system. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how occupational health screening may influence the early detection of occupational diseases among factory workers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative cross-sectional analytical or retrospective research design. The study population will comprise factory workers employed in selected manufacturing and industrial facilities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, industrial areas, factories, departments, and eligible factory workers. Occupational health screening will be measured using indicators such as frequency of medical examinations, availability of pre-employment and periodic screening, respiratory health assessment, hearing assessment, laboratory investigations, vision screening, musculoskeletal assessment, exposure-specific health examinations, availability of trained occupational health personnel, and accessibility of screening services. Early detection of occupational diseases will be assessed using indicators such as identification of abnormal health findings, newly detected occupational conditions, confirmed occupational disease cases, age or duration of employment at detection, referral for further assessment, and timely initiation of appropriate management. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, occupational health screening records, medical examination reports, workplace health registers, hospital records, laboratory reports, and relevant organizational documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize workers' characteristics, occupational health screening practices, and patterns of occupational disease detection. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis, will be used to determine the effect of occupational health screening on early detection of occupational diseases. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that occupational health screening has a significant positive effect on the early detection of occupational diseases among factory workers in Nigeria. Factory workers who undergo regular occupational health screening are expected to have a higher likelihood of having work-related health conditions identified at an early stage than workers with limited access to screening services. Periodic respiratory assessments, hearing examinations, laboratory investigations, vision screening, and other exposure-specific health assessments may facilitate early identification of abnormalities associated with occupational hazards. Early detection may allow workers to receive timely treatment, reduce continued exposure to harmful workplace conditions, and support appropriate referral and workplace interventions. Occupational health screening may also enable employers to identify patterns of work-related illness and strengthen workplace hazard control measures. Conversely, irregular screening, inadequate equipment, insufficient occupational health personnel, poor record keeping, limited worker participation, and weak enforcement of occupational health regulations may contribute to delayed detection of occupational diseases. The study therefore expects regular and comprehensive occupational health screening to contribute significantly to early detection and management of occupational diseases among factory workers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on occupational health screening, occupational diseases, factory worker health, workplace disease detection, industrial health, occupational safety, preventive healthcare, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, employers, factory managers, occupational health practitioners, workplace safety officers, healthcare providers, trade unions, regulatory agencies, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening occupational health screening in Nigerian industries. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding periodic occupational health examinations, improving access to exposure-specific screening services, strengthening occupational health personnel and facilities, improving workplace health record systems, increasing worker awareness and participation in screening programmes, strengthening referral and follow-up systems, and ensuring compliance with occupational health and safety standards to promote early detection and prevention of occupational diseases among factory workers across Nigeria.
