Effect of Ovarian Cancer Awareness on Ovarian Cancer Warning-Sign Recognition among Women in Nigeria
Abstract
Ovarian cancer is an important women's health concern that can have serious consequences when symptoms are not recognized and appropriate medical evaluation is delayed. The early manifestations of ovarian cancer may be vague, persistent, or easily confused with common gastrointestinal, menstrual, or other health conditions. Women may therefore have difficulty distinguishing potential warning signs from ordinary health complaints. Limited awareness, misconceptions, fear of cancer, stigma, inadequate access to reliable health information, and cultural beliefs may further contribute to poor recognition of ovarian cancer symptoms. Ovarian cancer awareness programmes provide an opportunity to improve women's understanding of potential warning signs, risk factors, and the importance of seeking professional medical assessment for persistent or concerning symptoms. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of ovarian cancer awareness on ovarian cancer warning-sign recognition among women in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Model, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Health Belief Model explains how women's perceptions of their susceptibility to ovarian cancer, perceived severity, perceived benefits of recognizing warning signs, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their ability to identify concerning symptoms. The Knowledge-Attitude-Practice Model provides a framework for explaining how improved health information may influence women's understanding and interpretation of ovarian cancer warning signs and subsequently support appropriate health-related decisions. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-efficacy, social interaction, reinforcement, and environmental influences in the acquisition and application of health knowledge. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how ovarian cancer awareness may influence warning-sign recognition among women in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative analytical cross-sectional or quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise adult women attending selected hospitals, primary healthcare centres, women's health clinics, community health programmes, workplaces, and other relevant settings across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, local government areas, communities, healthcare facilities, organizations, and eligible women. Ovarian cancer awareness will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to ovarian cancer information, awareness of ovarian cancer risk factors, family history and genetic risk, awareness of potential symptoms, sources of cancer information, frequency of exposure to awareness programmes, and participation in cancer education activities. Ovarian cancer warning-sign recognition will be assessed using indicators such as the ability to identify persistent abdominal or pelvic discomfort, abdominal swelling or bloating, feeling full quickly or difficulty eating, urinary or bowel changes, unexplained changes in menstrual or reproductive symptoms where relevant, persistent fatigue, and other symptoms requiring professional assessment. The study will emphasize that individual symptoms are often nonspecific and that persistent or unusual symptoms require appropriate clinical evaluation rather than self-diagnosis. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires and appropriate cancer-awareness assessment instruments. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, levels of ovarian cancer awareness, and warning-sign recognition. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of ovarian cancer awareness on warning-sign recognition. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, warning-sign recognition scores before and after structured awareness education may be compared, while relevant demographic, educational, socioeconomic, reproductive, cultural, and healthcare-access factors are appropriately controlled. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that ovarian cancer awareness has a significant positive effect on ovarian cancer warning-sign recognition among women in Nigeria. Women exposed to structured and evidence-based ovarian cancer awareness programmes are expected to demonstrate greater ability to recognize potential warning signs than women with limited exposure to ovarian cancer information. Increased awareness may help women understand that ovarian cancer symptoms can be subtle and nonspecific and that persistent or unusual symptoms should be evaluated by qualified healthcare professionals. Awareness may also correct misconceptions, reduce fear and stigma surrounding ovarian cancer, and improve women's confidence in identifying symptoms that warrant medical attention. However, low health literacy, misinformation, cultural beliefs, limited access to reliable cancer information, fear of cancer diagnosis, and inadequate exposure to women's health education may reduce the effectiveness of awareness programmes. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally appropriate, evidence-based, and regularly reinforced ovarian cancer awareness to contribute significantly to improved warning-sign recognition among women in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on ovarian cancer awareness, ovarian cancer warning-sign recognition, women's health, cancer education, early cancer detection, reproductive health, health literacy, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health, hospitals, primary healthcare centres, cancer centres, healthcare providers, community health workers, women's health programmes, cancer advocacy organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving women's recognition of potential ovarian cancer symptoms. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for strengthening ovarian cancer awareness programmes, integrating cancer education into appropriate women's and primary healthcare services, training healthcare workers in effective cancer communication, developing culturally appropriate educational materials, improving access to reliable cancer information, and encouraging timely professional evaluation of persistent or concerning symptoms among women across Nigeria.
