Effect of Skin-Bleaching Health Education on Skin-Bleaching Prevention Practices among Young Women in Nigeria

Abstract

Skin bleaching, also referred to as skin lightening, is an important public health and dermatological concern because the prolonged or inappropriate use of skin-lightening products may expose individuals to potentially harmful substances and contribute to adverse skin and systemic health effects. Young women may be particularly exposed to skin-bleaching practices because of beauty standards, social expectations, peer influence, media portrayals, advertising, and perceived social or cosmetic benefits associated with lighter skin. Unsafe use of skin-lightening products may result in skin irritation, acne, dermatitis, uneven pigmentation, skin thinning, infections, and other complications depending on the substances used and the manner of application. Despite these risks, limited knowledge of the health consequences of skin bleaching and the ingredients contained in some products may contribute to continued use. Skin-bleaching health education provides an opportunity to improve knowledge of the potential risks and promote safer skin-health practices. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of skin-bleaching health education on skin-bleaching prevention practices among young women in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Theory of Planned Behavior. The Health Belief Model explains how young women's perceptions of susceptibility to skin-bleaching-related health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of avoiding unsafe skin-lightening practices, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their behaviour. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, social and environmental influences, self-efficacy, reinforcement, and behavioural skills in developing healthier skin-care practices. The Theory of Planned Behavior emphasizes attitudes toward skin bleaching, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions as determinants of skin-lightening practices. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how skin-bleaching health education may influence skin-bleaching prevention practices among young women in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise young women aged 18–35 years residing in selected urban, semi-urban, and rural communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, communities, households, universities, workplaces, and eligible young women. Skin-bleaching health education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on the health risks of skin bleaching, identification of potentially harmful ingredients, appropriate cosmetic-label interpretation, recognition of unsafe skin-lightening products, awareness of adverse skin effects, product safety, regulatory information, healthier skincare alternatives, media literacy, and strategies for resisting social pressure to bleach the skin. Skin-bleaching prevention practices will be assessed using indicators such as avoidance of unregulated skin-lightening products, checking cosmetic labels and ingredients, purchasing skincare products from reliable sources, avoiding products containing potentially harmful substances, discontinuing products when adverse reactions occur, seeking professional healthcare advice for persistent skin problems, adopting safer skincare practices, and avoiding practices that intentionally cause excessive skin lightening. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized skin-health knowledge and practice assessment tools, cosmetic-use assessments, product-label information where available, and relevant health education programme records. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, skin-care practices, exposure to skin-bleaching education, knowledge levels, and prevention practices. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of skin-bleaching health education on skin-bleaching prevention practices. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, prevention-practice scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared with those of a comparison group to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that skin-bleaching health education has a significant positive effect on skin-bleaching prevention practices among young women in Nigeria. Young women exposed to structured and culturally sensitive skin-health education are expected to demonstrate greater adoption of safer skincare practices and reduced engagement in unsafe skin-bleaching behaviours than young women without comparable exposure. Education may improve awareness of the potential health consequences of skin bleaching, help participants identify potentially harmful ingredients, and encourage careful evaluation of skincare products before purchase and use. Practical education may also encourage young women to avoid unregulated products, seek professional advice when experiencing adverse skin reactions, and adopt healthier alternatives for maintaining skin health. However, beauty standards, social-media influence, peer pressure, cultural perceptions, commercial advertising, desire for particular skin tones, misinformation, and easy availability of skin-lightening products may reduce the effectiveness of education alone. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally appropriate, evidence-based, and sustained skin-bleaching health education, supported by effective cosmetic regulation and positive public health communication, to contribute significantly to improved skin-bleaching prevention practices among young women in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on skin bleaching, skin-lightening practices, women's health, dermatological health, cosmetic safety, health education, behavioural health, consumer health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, universities, primary healthcare centres, dermatologists, pharmacists, public health practitioners, cosmetology professionals, women's health organizations, youth organizations, consumer protection groups, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for reducing harmful skin-bleaching practices. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating skin-health education into university and community health programmes, strengthening awareness of the risks associated with unsafe skin-lightening products, improving cosmetic-safety education, promoting healthy and culturally sensitive skin-health messages, encouraging appropriate healthcare-seeking for cosmetic-related skin problems, and strengthening measures to protect young women from potentially harmful skin-lightening products across Nigeria.
