Effect of Smartphone Use Education on Problematic Smartphone Use among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Problematic smartphone use is an emerging behavioural and public health concern among university students in Nigeria as smartphones have become increasingly important for academic activities, communication, entertainment, social interaction, online learning, financial transactions, and access to information. Although smartphones provide substantial benefits, excessive or poorly controlled use may interfere with sleep, academic engagement, concentration, physical activity, social relationships, and psychological wellbeing. University students may be particularly vulnerable because of frequent access to social media, messaging applications, online entertainment, mobile gaming, and other smartphone-based activities. However, limited awareness of problematic smartphone use and its potential consequences may make it difficult for students to identify unhealthy patterns and adopt appropriate digital habits. Smartphone use education provides an opportunity to equip university students with information about healthy smartphone use, warning signs of problematic use, potential consequences, self-regulation strategies, screen-time management, digital wellbeing, and available support services. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of smartphone use education on problematic smartphone use among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on Social Cognitive Theory, the Health Belief Model, and the Theory of Planned Behavior. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes the roles of knowledge, self-efficacy, self-regulation, observational learning, and environmental influences in developing and maintaining healthy smartphone-use behaviours. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of the risks associated with problematic smartphone use, perceived benefits of education, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their adoption of healthier smartphone habits. The Theory of Planned Behavior explains how attitudes, subjective norms, perceived behavioural control, and behavioural intentions may influence students' decisions regarding smartphone use. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how smartphone use education may influence problematic smartphone use among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Smartphone use education will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, knowledge of healthy smartphone use, awareness of problematic smartphone use, screen-time management, self-monitoring, digital self-regulation, management of smartphone distractions, healthy sleep practices, appropriate smartphone use during academic activities, management of social media use, mobile gaming awareness, notification management, scheduled breaks, and digital wellbeing strategies. Problematic smartphone use will be assessed using indicators such as excessive smartphone use, inability to control use, frequent checking, smartphone use during inappropriate situations, interference with academic activities, sleep disruption, reduced concentration, neglect of responsibilities, social withdrawal, use of smartphones to relieve negative emotions, distress when unable to access the device, and difficulty reducing smartphone use. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, smartphone-use diaries or self-monitoring records where appropriate, and validated problematic smartphone-use assessment instruments administered before and after the educational intervention where a quasi-experimental design is used. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, smartphone-use patterns, exposure to education, and levels of problematic smartphone use. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired or independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of smartphone use education on problematic smartphone use. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that smartphone use education has a significant positive effect on reducing problematic smartphone use among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured smartphone use education are expected to demonstrate healthier patterns of smartphone use, including improved self-regulation, reduced unnecessary screen time, better management of digital distractions, improved sleep-related smartphone practices, and reduced interference with academic responsibilities compared with their baseline behaviours or students without similar educational exposure. Practical approaches involving digital wellbeing education, self-monitoring exercises, screen-time management activities, notification-control strategies, scheduled smartphone breaks, and discussions of healthy technology habits may strengthen students' ability to regulate smartphone use. However, the educational and social importance of smartphones, continuous access to social media and online services, academic dependence on mobile technology, peer influence, entertainment demands, and difficulty maintaining behavioural changes may limit the effectiveness and sustainability of smartphone use education. The study therefore expects practical, evidence-based, culturally appropriate, and sustained smartphone use education to contribute significantly to reducing problematic smartphone use among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on smartphone use education, problematic smartphone use, digital wellbeing, university student behaviour, technology use, mental health promotion, health education, academic wellbeing, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the National Universities Commission, Federal Ministry of Education, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, university administrators, student affairs departments, counselling centres, university health services, psychologists, counsellors, public health practitioners, information and communication technology units, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for promoting healthier smartphone use among university students. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating digital wellbeing education into university student development programmes, strengthening counselling and support services, promoting healthy screen-time practices, improving students' digital self-regulation skills, reducing smartphone-related academic and sleep disruptions, and establishing sustainable digital wellbeing initiatives across universities in Nigeria.
