Effect of Suicide Awareness Education on Suicide Prevention Knowledge among University Students in Nigeria
Abstract
Suicide remains an important public health concern among young people and may have profound consequences for individuals, families, educational institutions, and communities. University students may experience academic pressure, financial difficulties, relationship challenges, social isolation, substance use, and other stressors that may contribute to psychological distress and increase vulnerability to suicidal thoughts or behaviours. Despite the importance of early recognition and prevention, students may have limited knowledge of suicide warning signs, risk factors, protective factors, appropriate communication, available support services, and appropriate responses to students experiencing suicidal distress. Suicide awareness education provides an opportunity to improve students' understanding of suicide prevention and promote appropriate recognition, supportive responses, and referral to professional assistance. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of suicide awareness education on suicide prevention knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and Health Literacy Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how students' perceptions of suicide risk, perceived severity, perceived benefits of prevention and early intervention, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence suicide prevention knowledge and preparedness. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-efficacy, social influence, and behavioural reinforcement in the acquisition and application of suicide prevention knowledge. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes students' ability to access, understand, evaluate, and appropriately apply suicide prevention information. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how suicide awareness education may influence suicide prevention knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, universities, faculties or departments, and eligible students. Suicide awareness education will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured educational sessions, frequency and duration of education, information on suicide risk factors, warning signs, protective factors, appropriate communication, stigma reduction, crisis response, available mental health services, referral pathways, and emergency support. Suicide prevention knowledge will be assessed using indicators such as recognition of suicide warning signs, understanding of risk and protective factors, knowledge of appropriate supportive responses, awareness of professional and community support services, understanding of referral procedures, knowledge of crisis intervention principles, recognition of situations requiring urgent professional assistance, and awareness of misconceptions surrounding suicide. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated suicide prevention knowledge instruments, educational programme attendance records, and relevant university counselling or student health programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, exposure to suicide awareness education, and suicide prevention knowledge scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of suicide awareness education on suicide prevention knowledge. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, suicide prevention knowledge scores before and after the educational intervention may be compared to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that suicide awareness education has a significant positive effect on suicide prevention knowledge among university students in Nigeria. Students exposed to structured and evidence-based suicide awareness education are expected to demonstrate improved knowledge of suicide warning signs, risk factors, protective factors, appropriate communication, available support services, and referral pathways. Interactive discussions, scenario-based learning, peer education, and practical training may improve students' confidence in responding appropriately when they encounter peers experiencing severe emotional distress. Education may also correct common misconceptions about suicide and promote a more supportive and non-stigmatizing attitude toward mental health concerns. However, stigma, cultural beliefs, fear of discussing suicide, misconceptions, concerns about confidentiality, inadequate access to university counselling services, and limited availability of trained mental health professionals may affect the effectiveness of awareness education. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally sensitive, evidence-based, and regularly reinforced suicide awareness education to contribute significantly to improved suicide prevention knowledge among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on suicide awareness education, suicide prevention knowledge, university student mental health, suicide prevention, mental health literacy, health education, stigma reduction, student support services, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, universities, university counselling centres, student health services, mental health professionals, student organizations, youth-focused organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for strengthening suicide prevention among young adults. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating suicide prevention education into university health and orientation programmes, strengthening campus counselling and referral systems, improving peer-support initiatives, training staff and students in appropriate suicide prevention responses, reducing stigma, and developing sustainable campus-based suicide prevention programmes across Nigeria.
