Effect of Virtual Reality Relaxation Programmes on Stress Levels among University Students in Nigeria

Abstract

Stress is an important mental health and public health concern among university students in Nigeria, who may experience academic workloads, examination pressure, financial difficulties, relationship challenges, uncertainty about employment, and other demands associated with university life. Persistent stress may negatively affect students' concentration, academic performance, sleep, emotional wellbeing, social functioning, and overall quality of life. Conventional stress-management approaches may not always be accessible, engaging, or appealing to all students. Virtual reality relaxation programmes provide an emerging digital approach that can use immersive environments, guided breathing, relaxation exercises, calming audiovisual experiences, and simulated natural settings to support stress reduction. Such programmes may provide students with accessible and engaging opportunities to practise relaxation within university settings. Against this background, this study investigates the effect of virtual reality relaxation programmes on stress levels among university students in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, Attention Restoration Theory, and Social Cognitive Theory. The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping explains how students' appraisal of academic and personal demands and their perceived coping resources influence their experience of stress. Attention Restoration Theory suggests that exposure to restorative environments, including simulated natural environments, may reduce mental fatigue and support psychological restoration. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-efficacy, behavioural skills, observational learning, and self-regulation in the development and maintenance of effective stress-management behaviours. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how virtual reality relaxation programmes may influence stress levels among university students in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise undergraduate students enrolled in selected public and private universities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, universities, faculties, departments, and eligible students. Virtual reality relaxation programmes will be measured using indicators such as exposure to virtual reality sessions, frequency and duration of sessions, type of virtual environment, guided relaxation exercises, breathing exercises, mindfulness activities, simulated natural environments, immersive audiovisual experiences, participant engagement, and programme adherence. Stress levels will be assessed using indicators such as perceived stress, academic stress, emotional tension, irritability, difficulty relaxing, sleep-related stress, concentration difficulties, feelings of being overwhelmed, and overall perceived stress. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated stress assessment instruments, virtual reality programme participation records, and relevant physiological measures where feasible. Stress levels will be assessed before and after participation in the virtual reality relaxation programme. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize students' demographic and academic characteristics, exposure to the intervention, and levels of stress. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired sample tests, independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the effect of virtual reality relaxation programmes on stress levels. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that virtual reality relaxation programmes have a significant negative effect on stress levels among university students in Nigeria. Students who participate in structured virtual reality relaxation sessions are expected to demonstrate reduced perceived stress, emotional tension, difficulty relaxing, and other stress-related symptoms compared with their baseline levels or students without similar intervention exposure. Immersive simulated natural environments, guided breathing, mindfulness exercises, and relaxation activities may provide students with temporary psychological detachment from academic and personal demands and support healthier stress-management practices. The interactive and immersive nature of virtual reality may also increase engagement with relaxation activities among students who may be less responsive to conventional stress-management approaches. However, the effectiveness and sustainability of the intervention may be affected by the cost and availability of virtual reality equipment, technical difficulties, inadequate digital infrastructure, limited technical expertise, motion discomfort among some users, and challenges integrating the programme into university support services. The study therefore expects accessible, appropriately designed, and regularly implemented virtual reality relaxation programmes to contribute significantly to stress reduction among university students in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on virtual reality relaxation programmes, stress levels, university students, digital mental health, technology-assisted stress management, immersive health interventions, student wellbeing, mental health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Universities Commission, universities, student counselling centres, psychologists, psychiatrists, public health practitioners, digital health specialists, technology developers, student organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding the potential use of immersive technologies in student mental health promotion. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for developing affordable virtual reality relaxation programmes, integrating technology-assisted stress-management interventions into university counselling and health services, training appropriate personnel, improving access to digital mental health technologies, and establishing sustainable technology-based wellbeing initiatives across Nigerian universities.
