Impact of Autism Screening Training on Early Autism Recognition among Primary School Teachers in Nigeria

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that may affect communication, social interaction, behaviour, and sensory processing, with characteristics often becoming noticeable during early childhood. Early recognition of developmental differences can facilitate timely assessment, intervention, family support, and appropriate educational planning. Primary school teachers may play an important role in recognizing developmental concerns because they interact with children regularly and can observe communication, social, behavioural, and learning patterns within the school environment. However, limited knowledge of autism characteristics, misconceptions about developmental conditions, inadequate training, and uncertainty about appropriate referral pathways may delay recognition of children who require further assessment. Autism screening training provides an opportunity to equip teachers with knowledge of developmental warning signs, appropriate use of screening approaches, and referral procedures. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of autism screening training on early autism recognition among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Health Literacy Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how teachers' perceptions of developmental concerns, perceived importance of early recognition, perceived benefits of screening, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their recognition and referral practices. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes observational learning, self-efficacy, practical skill development, behavioural reinforcement, and environmental influences in the acquisition and application of autism recognition skills. The Health Literacy Framework emphasizes teachers' ability to access, understand, evaluate, and appropriately apply information about child development and autism. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how autism screening training may influence early autism recognition among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise teachers working in selected public and private primary schools across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, local government areas, schools, classes, and eligible teachers. Autism screening training will be assessed using indicators such as exposure to structured training, duration and frequency of training, knowledge of autism characteristics, recognition of communication difficulties, social interaction differences, repetitive behaviours, restricted interests, sensory differences, developmental warning signs, appropriate screening procedures, communication with parents, and referral pathways. Early autism recognition will be assessed using indicators such as teachers' ability to identify developmental warning signs, recognition of behaviours that warrant further assessment, appropriate differentiation between developmental concerns and normal variations, use of standardized developmental screening or observation tools where appropriate and within the teacher's role, documentation of concerns, communication with parents or caregivers, and referral to qualified healthcare or developmental professionals for comprehensive assessment. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated autism knowledge instruments, standardized teacher assessment or case-vignette instruments, training attendance records, school referral records, and relevant school health documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize teachers' characteristics, exposure to autism screening training, and levels of early autism recognition. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of autism screening training on early autism recognition. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, recognition scores before and after the training intervention may be compared to determine changes associated with the programme. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that autism screening training has a significant positive impact on early autism recognition among primary school teachers in Nigeria. Teachers who receive structured and practical training are expected to demonstrate improved ability to identify communication, social, behavioural, and sensory characteristics that may warrant further developmental assessment. Training may also improve teachers' confidence in documenting developmental concerns, communicating appropriately with parents and caregivers, and using established referral pathways. Case-based learning, classroom examples, practical observation exercises, and repeated reinforcement may strengthen teachers' ability to recognize developmental differences in school settings. However, limited access to trained developmental specialists, inadequate school health services, misconceptions about autism, cultural beliefs, stigma, limited availability of appropriate screening resources, and weak referral systems may reduce the effectiveness of training. The study therefore expects accessible, culturally appropriate, practical, and regularly reinforced autism screening training, combined with functional referral systems, to contribute significantly to improved early recognition of autism-related developmental concerns among primary school teachers in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on autism screening training, early autism recognition, autism spectrum disorder, child development, developmental screening, school health, inclusive education, teacher training, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Education, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, state ministries of health and education, primary school authorities, paediatricians, child development specialists, psychologists, speech and language professionals, special education professionals, parent organizations, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for improving early recognition of developmental concerns among school-aged children. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating autism and developmental screening education into teacher training and professional development programmes, strengthening school-based referral pathways, improving collaboration between schools and child-health professionals, increasing awareness among parents and caregivers, and supporting inclusive educational practices for children with developmental differences across Nigeria.
