Impact of Community Air-Pollution Sensors on Air-Pollution Awareness among Residents of Nigerian Urban Communities

Abstract

Air pollution is an important environmental and public health concern in Nigerian urban communities, where residents may be exposed to particulate matter, vehicle emissions, industrial pollutants, open burning, household fuel emissions, and other sources of poor air quality. Prolonged exposure to polluted air may contribute to respiratory illnesses, cardiovascular diseases, reduced lung function, and other adverse health outcomes. Despite these risks, many urban residents may have limited access to real-time information about local air quality and may not fully understand the health implications of air pollution exposure. Community air-pollution sensors provide an emerging environmental health technology that can measure selected air-quality indicators and provide locally relevant information about pollution levels. Making this information accessible to residents may improve awareness of air-pollution sources, exposure risks, health effects, and protective measures. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of community air-pollution sensors on air-pollution awareness among residents of Nigerian urban communities. The study will be anchored on the Health Belief Model, Social Ecological Model, and Environmental Health Risk-Communication Framework. The Health Belief Model explains how residents' perceptions of susceptibility to pollution-related health problems, perceived severity, perceived benefits of protective measures, perceived barriers, and cues to action may influence their response to air-quality information. The Social Ecological Model emphasizes the influence of individual, household, community, environmental, and policy-level factors on exposure to air pollution and adoption of protective behaviours. The Environmental Health Risk-Communication Framework emphasizes the importance of providing accurate, understandable, timely, and locally relevant information about environmental hazards and associated health risks. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how community air-pollution sensors may influence air-pollution awareness among residents of Nigerian urban communities. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental or analytical cross-sectional research design. The study population will comprise adults aged 18 years and above residing in selected urban communities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select geopolitical zones, states, urban local government areas, communities, neighbourhoods, households, and eligible residents. Community air-pollution sensor exposure will be assessed using indicators such as availability of sensors within the community, frequency of access to sensor readings, visibility of air-quality information, duration of exposure to sensor-generated information, accessibility through mobile or community display platforms, understanding of air-quality indicators, and availability of health-risk explanations alongside pollution measurements. Air-pollution awareness will be assessed using indicators such as knowledge of common air pollutants, awareness of local pollution sources, understanding of particulate matter and other relevant pollutants, recognition of health effects associated with air pollution, awareness of high-pollution periods, knowledge of vulnerable population groups, awareness of protective measures, understanding of air-quality information, and ability to interpret community air-quality readings. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, standardized environmental health awareness assessment tools, community sensor records, air-quality monitoring records, digital dashboards or public display records, and relevant environmental health programme documents. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize participants' characteristics, sensor exposure, local air-quality information, and air-pollution awareness scores. Inferential statistical techniques, including chi-square tests, t-tests, correlation analysis, and logistic or multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of community air-pollution sensors on air-pollution awareness. Where a quasi-experimental design is adopted, awareness scores before and after installation of community air-pollution sensors may be compared with those of a comparison community without sensor exposure to determine changes associated with the intervention. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that community air-pollution sensors have a significant positive impact on air-pollution awareness among residents of Nigerian urban communities. Residents exposed to accessible, understandable, and locally relevant air-quality information are expected to demonstrate greater awareness of pollution levels, major pollution sources, associated health risks, and appropriate protective measures than residents without comparable access to sensor-generated information. Real-time or regularly updated information may make air pollution more visible and understandable to residents and may help them recognize periods of increased exposure. Community sensor information may also encourage discussions about environmental health and motivate residents to take protective measures such as reducing outdoor activities during severe pollution episodes, avoiding areas with heavy smoke, improving household ventilation where appropriate, and reducing exposure to known pollution sources. However, inaccurate or poorly calibrated sensors, limited community access to readings, inadequate explanation of technical air-quality measurements, poor digital connectivity, low environmental health literacy, and lack of trust in sensor information may reduce effectiveness. The study therefore expects accurate, well-maintained, accessible, and clearly communicated community air-quality monitoring systems to contribute significantly to improved air-pollution awareness among urban residents in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on environmental health, air-pollution monitoring, community-based environmental surveillance, digital environmental health, health education, risk communication, urban health, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Federal Ministry of Environment, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency, state environmental protection agencies, local government authorities, public health practitioners, environmental health officers, community organizations, technology developers, development partners, and policymakers regarding the use of community-level air-quality monitoring technologies. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for expanding community air-quality monitoring, improving sensor calibration and maintenance, presenting air-quality information in understandable formats, strengthening environmental health education, linking pollution readings with appropriate health advice, and promoting community participation in air-pollution prevention and exposure-reduction programmes across Nigerian urban communities.
