Impact of Compassion Fatigue Training on Compassion Fatigue among Mental Health Professionals in Nigeria

Abstract

Compassion fatigue is an important occupational mental health concern among mental health professionals in Nigeria who provide continuous emotional and psychological support to individuals experiencing mental illness, trauma, crisis, and other forms of psychological distress. Prolonged exposure to patients' suffering, high workloads, emotionally demanding cases, staff shortages, limited resources, and challenging working environments may contribute to emotional exhaustion, reduced empathy, detachment, diminished job satisfaction, and other symptoms associated with compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue may negatively affect professionals' wellbeing, quality of care, professional functioning, and continuity of mental health services. Compassion fatigue training provides an opportunity to equip mental health professionals with knowledge and practical skills for recognizing early warning signs, developing healthy coping strategies, maintaining professional boundaries, practising self-care, managing occupational stress, and accessing appropriate psychological support. Against this background, this study investigates the impact of compassion fatigue training on compassion fatigue among mental health professionals in Nigeria. The study will be anchored on the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, Social Cognitive Theory, and the Job Demands-Resources Model. The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping explains how mental health professionals' appraisal of emotionally demanding work situations and their available coping resources may influence compassion fatigue. Social Cognitive Theory emphasizes self-efficacy, self-regulation, behavioural skills, observational learning, and supportive work environments in developing effective strategies for managing occupational emotional demands. The Job Demands-Resources Model explains how high emotional and workload demands may contribute to occupational strain, while personal and organizational resources may help professionals manage these demands and maintain wellbeing. Collectively, these theoretical perspectives provide a suitable framework for explaining how compassion fatigue training may influence compassion fatigue among mental health professionals in Nigeria. The study will adopt a quantitative quasi-experimental research design. The study population will comprise mental health professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurses, counsellors, social workers, occupational therapists, and other appropriately qualified mental health personnel working in selected public and private mental health facilities across Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique will be used to select states, healthcare facilities, mental health institutions, departments, and eligible professionals. Compassion fatigue training will be measured using indicators such as exposure to structured training sessions, training frequency and duration, education on compassion fatigue, recognition of early warning signs, stress-management strategies, self-care education, emotional regulation, professional boundary management, coping-skills development, peer-support strategies, workplace support, and knowledge of available psychological assistance. Compassion fatigue will be assessed using indicators such as emotional exhaustion, reduced empathy, secondary traumatic stress, psychological distress, emotional detachment, reduced sense of professional effectiveness, difficulty recovering after emotionally demanding cases, work-related fatigue, reduced job satisfaction, and overall compassion fatigue severity. Data will be collected using structured questionnaires, validated compassion fatigue assessment instruments, training assessment tools, and relevant professional records where appropriate. Compassion fatigue will be assessed before and after participation in the training intervention. Descriptive statistics will be used to summarize professionals' demographic and occupational characteristics, exposure to compassion fatigue training, and levels of compassion fatigue. Inferential statistical techniques, including paired sample tests, independent sample tests, chi-square tests, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis where appropriate, will be used to determine the impact of compassion fatigue training on compassion fatigue. Diagnostic tests will also be conducted to assess the reliability, validity, and robustness of the findings. The study is expected to find that compassion fatigue training has a significant negative impact on compassion fatigue among mental health professionals in Nigeria. Professionals exposed to structured compassion fatigue training are expected to demonstrate reduced emotional exhaustion, secondary traumatic stress, psychological distress, emotional detachment, and other symptoms associated with compassion fatigue compared with their baseline levels or professionals without similar training exposure. Training in self-care, stress management, emotional regulation, professional boundaries, coping strategies, peer support, and recognition of early warning signs may strengthen professionals' ability to manage the emotional demands of mental health practice. Improved awareness may also encourage professionals to seek appropriate psychological support before occupational distress becomes severe. However, heavy workloads, staff shortages, inadequate mental health resources, long working hours, exposure to severe patient distress, poor organizational support, and limited access to professional wellbeing services may reduce the effectiveness and sustainability of training. The study therefore expects practical, evidence-based, regularly reinforced, and organizationally supported compassion fatigue training to contribute significantly to reducing compassion fatigue among mental health professionals in Nigeria. The study is expected to contribute to the literature on compassion fatigue training, compassion fatigue, mental health professionals, occupational mental health, healthcare worker wellbeing, secondary traumatic stress, self-care, professional resilience, workplace health promotion, and public health in Nigeria. The findings will provide useful information to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, state ministries of health, psychiatric hospitals, teaching hospitals, mental health facilities, professional regulatory bodies, psychologists, psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, counsellors, social workers, healthcare administrators, development partners, and policymakers regarding strategies for protecting the wellbeing of mental health professionals. The study will also provide evidence-based recommendations for integrating compassion fatigue training into professional development programmes, strengthening employee wellbeing services, establishing regular occupational mental health assessments, improving staff support systems, promoting self-care and peer-support activities, reducing excessive workloads, and developing sustainable workplace mental health programmes for mental health professionals across Nigeria.
